I live in Lake Charles. I don't even know what kind of grass I have, maybe a mix of St Aug & Bermuda. I need some guidance on timing and product to put down to make my grass look nice.

I've read a lot of mixed reviews on the Scotts Bonus S so I came here. If you guys could just lay out a timeline and what to do, I would appreciate it. Do I need to properly identify the grass type first?

Also, do you guys recommend a certain weed killer?

Weed killer and fertilizer needs to come at different times... Take some pics of the grass, you need to know what you have in the yard...

So avoid all the weed and feed combos like Bonus S?

What is the rough timeline to follow for everything? I don't want to miss it.

Weeds killer comes first, could be now, could be soon... fertilizer doesn't come till the grass is green an growing. Thus the problem with the weed-n-feed.

Scots bonus S will work, but not as well as applying individual products. When applying individual products you can apply based on the need of your yard. If you are uncomfortable doing this, Soctt's Bonus S is a good place to start. Wait until after the frost date (Mid March). Apply the first treatment, wait 2 weeks, apply again, wait 2 weeks, apply again. It is a 3 treatment system. Last, apply the turf builder 2 weeks after last bonus s treatment.

Man, one thing I've noticed is it's expensive to do this

Do I need to identify the grass before the weeding gets put down as well?

Yes and yes
Each feed/weed product is amde for a specific grass.

If you put down the weed/feed for st. aug and have bermuda- Bye Bye yard

I know bc a friend of mine did this once.

Yes, some weed killers kill some grasses but not others. Gotta know what you have so you don't kill good stuff...

Ok, I'll see if I can get a decent picture. I don't trust myself to identify it even after looking online at different types/pictures of grass.

Would you recommend just using artazine or 24d anytime between now and March? Get a burn on what's there and zap any thing trying to emerge...

Then coming back mid march with Scotts, I think I have Southern Weed and Feed for St. Augustine lawns(Atrazine and fertilizer combo)?

Eta: I ask because I just bought the Scotts 2 days ago...

Exactly what I am doing.
Yes, I am putting down 24D today! I have a lot of broad leaf crap coming up along my fence line. Its gng down.

Another point, you can mix 24D and round up, but you have to be careful of the mixture rates, bc at an even mix, they will work against each other.

I have the same problem. Clover is everywhere. I have right at 6 acres and the wife is wanting to weed/feed it all to kill it. Going to have to take out a loan to do that. Trying to find an cheaper solution.

The clover and most of the other crap will die when it warms up, but if you need it dead now 2-4D is the way to go.

Atrazine, itself, is significantly cheaper than 2-4-D. The problem is trying to get it without weed and feed and they usually don't sell it pure at the local co-ops. If you look at the content of the Atrazine AI in a bag of weed and feed its almost nonexistent.

don't mean to hijack, but does anyone have experience with hydro seed. My house is built up and seed would just run off. Wondering if hydro seed is a good option and how quickly it takes.

My yard looks like a cabbage patch right now.

Whats good to spread that won't kill bermuda, but will get rid of the cabbage(no idea what it's really called)?
