That weed will die out as the temperatures climb. I don't know what it is, the purple, but I've seen it go away as temps climb. The clover is easy to deal with. It looks like you have centipede as your main grass.

Is 2,4-D safe on St Augustine grass?

I wouldnt use roundup. It ends up making the soil more suitable for more weeds in the future.

If dormant and follow directions. I think it's like 1-1.5 oz per gallon.

For the 2,4-D users, do you spot treat or do the entire yard?

I've used it over the whole lawn and then spot treated after that.

Jake, is it safe on Centipede/St Aug this time of year?

What would you recommend next? What type of fertilizer and when?

That won't do anything to the crabgrass will it? I normally get that too.

First get rid of the St. Augustine; too high maintenance and expensive. Get a good Bermuda (it will cost about 1/3 of St. Augustine); you'll thank me in the long run.

If I have St. Augustine and Centipede and want to knock out clover and crabgrass, should I do a treatment of 2,4-D then wait a few weeks and do Scotts Halts? Wait a few weeks til grass starts growing and do a fertilizer?

24D will not work on the crab grass. I'm telling y'all, it is safe to use round up this time of year. The round up won't kill Bermuda because it's dormant.

I have used a mix of 2,4D and Atrazine and done spot treatments with good success.

You also need a surfactant/spreadersticker for the atrazine to work.

Atrazine already had some surfactants in it. If you buy it in liquid form you don't need to add anymore. (I make atrazine and other triazines for a living).

Crab grass is a pain in the arse

I tried baking soda which hammered the frick out of it but it always came back in the same spot

Best way to kill crab grass seems to be roundup carefully applied to the crabgrass only

I have not used 2,4 when the lawn was dormant. I did put out Halts last weekend and spot treated to crabgrass remnants from last year with round up.

Most of the weeds you have now will die out as the temps warm but don't let them flower. The only way to deal with crabgrass in centipede is by using a preemergent or digging it out. Or if you don't mind a temporary Brown spot, try round up on just that one weed. There may be some products available to professionals that may be able to kill crabgrass without harming centepede or st. Aug, but you need a license to purchase it.

I'm no expert but i did pay attention to what the service I used to use was doing. I'd use a fertilizer available at home depot etc. once the lawn starts to green up. There is a product called speedzone southern but the pro told me I'd be at a higher risk to burn my lawn with it.

When I bought my house 3 years ago, I had crab grass so bad in the front that digging was the only option. There was almost no real grass. I used my tiller to tear up the area, then burned the crap out of the area. By high summer the St. Aug has grown back in the the loose soil. If crab grass has taken over, this may be your only option.

Yep, with crab grass, if you can get ahold of pure roundup (not the premixed stuff from Wal Marx, and mix it with a little diquat, spray that right down on top of the crab grass in the middle.
