Dog - disc herniated in back from jump, Updated, bad.

Our small family dog obviously took a leap too far yesterday. He barely moved around yesterday evening and took him to vet this am. Vet said it was a bad disc problem, probably from a jump. dog now cannot move its hind legs (doc saw this - it progressed the few hours he was at vet). Vet said 4-6 weeks total bedrest and if dog not better in 10 days to bring him back. Heart-broken family here. very active dog, hyper. Anyone else been thru this? Is he going to
really get better? UPDATE - had to put him down, like several of yall said I should have taken him to surgery (Baton Rouge) the day I took him to vet. Never regained anything, starting chewing on his leg, vet said there were no "positives". Thanks for all the advice, And if I ever get a dog again (unlikely) surgery will be within 48 hours if its a back problem!

If it got worse fast, you have (had) 2 options- surgery which is about 7k, or waiting like your vet said.
When the back legs stop working and were working, its surgery time, especailly within 24 hours. Success of surgery drops the longer things go

well, there is a ton that goes into ruptured discs in dogs, first if he isn't on predisone, he needs to be, immediately, second, immediate response to disc problems in small breeds is crucial, time is always of the essence
but there almost always three cases.. terminal, loss of some rear motor skills and total recovery
i can tell you if papa aVa was seeing it, it would have a great chance, he is a huge advocate of predisone if given properly, it kept my dog alive another 2+ years.. no shite

My wife was working at a vet clinic in college.
Someone brought in a "cat" turned out it was a yorkie with mange. Well they got him all cleared up and someone was going to adopt him. Well a vet tech dropped him and he broke his back. Knocked out for 2 hours.
Well he was completely paralyzed. Wife felt bad, started taking him home. Sort of a reason to live type deal. One day he stood up, the next he walked, a week later he was running all over.
He kinda hops like a bunny to get everywhere but you can't stop that little bastard.
Hold out hope, give him lots of attention in the meantime.

Happened to my dachshund in 2012 then 2013. First time she was fine after 10 days. Next time the vet said there was nothing we could do...had to put her down . Just be optimistic and keep movement at a minimum.

If you're close you may want to take it to the LSU vet school.
My neighbor and good friend is a vet surgeon. All he does is surgeries and most of those are back surgeries.

Have a Dachshund that has been on death's door several times. Had no use of rear legs or bowel control for 3 days one time (was almost enough to pull the plug). He is 14 now and keeps on kicking.
Anti-inflammatories are a must. Additionally, there are laser treatments that work really well to reduce inflammation around the disc. The vet can usually find the problematic disc by feel.

Wife has a cocker poodle mix . This happened to him about three months age. The vet gave him steroid pills and we kept him in his crate for about six wweeks. Within 5 days he was mobile again but make sure you keep them on bed rest so they can't aggrivate the disk again.

My Mom, who is old school German FWIW, took that dog and put her in the tub every day to help support the weight off her back. She also massaged that dogs back legs and spine area everyday for about two-three weeks. Dogs pain lessened, starting walking (slow going) and in 3 months or so was back to almost 100%.
Mom took her back to the vet,told him what she did, showed him the dog walking nearly good as new and then promptly told him he should look for a new line of work because he wasn't worth a damn at this!
Ya gotta love her!
FWIW He didn't go to Auburn.

serious thanks to all replies. just took him back because the pain hadn't lessened and he was so tense he wouldnt bend his front legs (he can but wont) Vet gave him more steroids and starting an iv, i am going to pick him up later. frick. poor puppy, he is so scared.

Brace yourself, the problem is only going to persists as long as the dog is alive. This happened to our dog about 2 years ago. Never was the same. We had to put her down in September. Easily the worst day and experience of my life. I still hurt and tear up when I think about it. She was only 7.

Jeffsdad, a family member of mine just went thru the same thing with his pet beagle. Dog was so bad he he couldn't move. So he took him from outside and kept him in a baby bed to take care of him. Friend did research and ended up bringing dog to a chiropractor a couple times. Dog recovered and is 100% now. My friends name is Mat and you can call him at this #225 445-1934. He would be glad to tell you his experience with his beagle. Good luck hope he gets better soon!

Has vet mentioned whether or not your dog has deep pain. This is the main indicator for severity. To test this they clamp onto your dogs toe with hemostats. If he doesn't yelp or feel then likely there is a ruptured disc with severe spinal cord compression. Prognosis becomes poor at this point even with surgery. Most surgeons will tell you less than 20% chance they will regain motor function. Now there are cases in which dogs have recovered with conservative treatment but like I said it depends on degree of spinal cord injury. Can take months and often with this degree of spinal injury they cannot voluntarily urinate. Have to express bladder several times daily. Sorry to hear keep us posted. As someone mentioned earlier laser treatments work well with these cases.

vet said felt him pinch toes, without a lot of pressure.
