Why are our guards so bad at getting to the FT line?

Aced ?@McNamara247
The Pels are now in the bottom 10 in the league in FT rate. And Gordon's rate is almost as bad as Jrue's now after these last three games.

Refs just don't give them calls. It has been this way for awhile.

Guys like Harden and Westbrook pick up fouls if someone takes a breathe within two feet of them.

This is also a crazy stat considering the Pels are probably near the top of the league in shots in the paint.

And I'm fairly certain EG hasn't gotten a call in about three years.

Want to see something I found interesting?

In EG's last year with the clippers, he averaged 16.9 fga per game. He also averaged 6.2fta per game.

27.8% of his shots were within 3ft
19.9% of his shots were 3ft-10ft
5.4% of his shots were 10ft-16ft
16.2% of his shots were 16ft<3pt
30.7% of his shots were 3pt range

That is 2.73fga per fta

In EG's tenure with the Pelicans, he averages 12.9 fga per game. He also averages 3.9fta per game.

29.9% of his shots are within 3ft
17.2% of his shots are 3ft-10ft
5.6% of his shots are 10ft-16ft
16.7% of his shots are 16ft<3pt
35.5% of his shots are 3pt range

That is 3.31fga per fta.

Don't even look at the fga/fta for this year, its even more ludicrous. His % of shots within 10ft aren't that drastic for him to see that big of a decrease in fta's

Eye test wise, it's a combination of 2 things.

- our guards are so thick they never get knocked on their arse.
- we spend very little time working the refs outside of AD, Ryno, Monty.

That's part of it. I think it's also the fact that none of those guys are explosive athletes (pour one out for pre-injury Gordon) nor do they have guile to their drive game.

I also wonder how much they suffer from typically going against set defenses. That can work for freaks like Davis, Durant, Westbrook or clever guys like Harden, but these guards aren't up to that task. Just spitballing here, but maybe with more movement, they can attack more scrambling defenses which will lead to more desperation from opponents?

Maybe it's because New Orleans plays a very slow game and so players are less likely to get fouled compared to a team getting fouled at the rim who constantly runs the break. When defenses are scrambling, they are more likely to be out of position and foul.

Well Westbrook got a highlight steal where he basically ran through Gordon the other night. Westbrook would have got a call if he was on offense.

The crazy thing is the pels have three guards that are excellent taking it to the rim, but they don't get the calls they deserve.

Not that it would have turned the game around, but yeah, it looked like a foul that's usually called to me.
