Rules talk about "attendance zones" and choice of school upon a student entering high school. Does anyone know what specifically an attendance zone is? Is this by parish? or some other school map.

By parish. If you go to the school board page for each parish, they should have somewhere to check the boundaries.

K, Tks

Follow up question.

If he attends a Jr. High that is 6-8 and one of the high schools that he could choose is 8-12; during what year does he have to make this choice? 8th grade of middle school year or 9th grade at the high school of choice. I hope that makes sense.

9th grade. He could transfer early to the 8-12 school if they take him. i do not think his school of first choice is determined until he plays a sport at a school.

I'd like clarity on this as well. I've heard you can attend anywhere in the Parish as long as you choose that school your freshman year. That's why Byrd was allowed to play in Non Select even though they are a magnet. Then Parkway was penalized for a freshman playing apparently from another school zone. Ouachita took 4 from Neville a year ago or so. West Monroe's situation with Belton, etc.

Any help on this would be appreciated. I'd like to know because I'm looking at houses, but don't want my kids going to some schools that we would be zoned for should I buy.

An attendance zone is the boundary lines that decide which school the child is zoned for.

However, thanks to open enrollment in high schools, a student is free to choose which school they want to attend and participate in athletics in assuming they have reliable transportation to that school.

The rules have changed for this year. It is my understanding that all parishes are now under the same rules.

A student is now only able to play varsity level sports from 7th grade and up.

Hypothetically if the kid goes to a school that is 8-12 and he plays jv or varsity level sports, then he has declared this school as his school of choice.

However, if he goes to the 8-12 grade school as an 8th grade and he does not play any varsity level sports then he is still free to attend another school his freshman year and participate assuming he was not registered and did not play any varsity level sports as a 7th grader.

I can try to help you but i'm not 100% sure what your question is.

If I do not understand your question then I can chat with my AD about it tomorrow. He just got back from the meetings so he will know for sure.

You answered it. My kids would have to go to the school zoned for, until high school. Then open enrollment would allow them to attend my school of choice.

To clarify my original post, we live in a great school zone now. We've outgrown our home. The houses we're looking at are in other school zones. Just wondered what I could do to have them stay in same school despite leaving zone

Karr & Landry Walker were also moved out of the select classification. Their attendance zones are the entire city of New Orleans.

I am assuming they are junior high aged kids or younger?

If that is the case then it may be worth looking into some rules.

For example if you like the school that your kids are in and you want them to stay there then different parishes have rules about establishment. If the kid has established themselves at a school and the family moves then they are allowed to stay within the parish/school.

A lot of parishes also have a failing rule. So if you move to a district and the school you are zoned for is a failing school then you would be able to move them to a better school even if it is out of parish.

There is also the private school route.

Yeah, just check. There are generally rules in place for this sort of thing.

Also, if you have a good relationship with your school/principal, it may be worth just asking them.

They may allow you guys just to stay. It is ultimately up to the school to turn you away in these instances.

Click on Handbook at the top. Its there. As far as athletics go the parish boundary is the attendance zone. Your local school board may have a different take on it though.

I asked her and she said no, but then everyone I coach with said she has to say that. The lowest 6 weeks grade between the 2 is a 98. They're in gifted. So it's likely the school would let them stay since they're zero trouble and good students.

Good luck on your situation.

I agree with your friends though, I'm sure the principal has to say that.

Just look into your options, there are always options.
