Anyone Hunt @ Stone County, MS?

I'm strongly considering building a camp on a piece of property in Stone County in the near term. If I do this, I will be looking for a place to hunt in the vicinity.
Does anyone hunt around Stone County? What can I expect?
I'm looking for deer, squirrel, and possibly turkeys. The purpose of this is to get my two year old son acclimated to the outdoors and also give me something to do with my spare time over the next year or so getting things in order on the property.

I haven't hunted that area, but if I remember right, there is a pretty large tract of national forest there...

Is that the Red Creek tract? I googled it and they had 5 deer reported in the 2013 season. 5 deer out of 23,000 acres left me perplexed.
I was hoping this was just due to the low hunter efforts or reporting. I think it is something I'm certainky going to look into soon though. The lot is on a private stocked lake, so we will always have fishing. I just want to make sure I can hunt close by if I'm going to invest time and money into the place.

I think it is called the DeSoto national forest and lies just off the south end of camp shelby...
I have only passed through the area while driving to the coast, but it seems like I remember the area being covered with large pine stands with some lowlands mixed in...

I'm not concentrating on public hunting, just inquiring about the quality of hunting in general. If I am going to invest my time and money in a place for the family, I will join a lease for the near term and eventually purchase my own tract down the road. If there is public hunting available, I could take advantage of that for a year until everything else is set up.
We basically have a lot on a lake that is completely undeveloped. I need to clear the lot, assess utilities to the lot, decide what type of dwelling to build or buy, get set up to fish the lake in my down time, and hunt. I'd love to get a temporary camp of some sorts established before this fall and use my down time during hunting season to continue improvements on the place. Junior won't be able to enjoy hunting or fishing for a few more years still, but I don't want to waste time in getting my ultimate plan established and put into action.

I have a 40 acre plot there. Killed a few, but all of SE MS is mostly a deer hounding area, especially anywhere near the National Forest. I quit hunting my place a coue years ago to try Akansas. AR has way more deer, and easier hunting.
That said, sometimes I miss short drives to my own land and may begin hunting there again soon. Squirrel hunting is good along hardwood bottoms, and there are turkey, too. Deer are just more pressured than other areas away from the coast.

Yeah-you'd better get used to dogs, poaching and lack of any respect for property rights.

Is that why the hunting around Poplarville seems difficult?

In an area with a lot of smaller properties, whether rednecks or city boy retreats, there is a lot of pressure on wildlife, especially deer and turkey. That goes double for public lands and nearby areas and hounds don't help.
If your area has large private holdings or large leases, the hunting will be better.

My thoughts exactly. I'm about five miles from Stone County and grew up hunting there in Red Creek WMA and it's definitely a tough area for deer unless you have a large spread that's isolated from the public.

Absolutely. I used to have a lease south of Hattiesburg. I got sick of having dogs run through it and finding dead deer on it. Wasn't worth even trying to keep people off of it. They would just run through gates and fences. They don't give a damn.
