People like Bill maher love him bc he's got celebrity and science influence. They pretty much use the "uh, Bill nye says this so you're stupid for thinking otherwise" thing all the time.

He just sounds like any other flaky political activist when he appears on talk shows to scream about global warming, but no one can question him because SCIENCE!

Uh, actually, everyone can question him because SCIENCE! That's what science is. It just so happens a near consensus on the topic, which may explain why what he says is so ubiquitous.

More than half of the PhDs I know are incapable of communicating a basic scientific concept to the average person who has no scientific background. This is why good teachers in the sciences are so rare, and why Bill Nye is very successful.

Literally nobody was watching him in the 70's and 80's. What are you talking about?

While pretty much all PhDs are scientists, you don't need one to be a scientist.

You don't even need a bachelor's to be one.

This. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and the first I heard of this guy was like 2 or 3 years ago.

Well that explains why I never watched or even heard of him. That being the case, how did this discussion devolve into another Gen X vs. Millennials pissing match?
