Going to the Wednesday practice round this year. Haven't really looked into lodging yet but thinking of just staying in Atlanta and making the drive that morning. Any other ideas? I know most things are sold out close to Augusta obviously.

Any other must dos or guidance(entrance gate, best way to walk the course etc etc) for a first timer? All advice is appreciated

I always like getting there as early as possible and walking the full 18 to start off. If you can't find a spot in Augusta, I'd recommend staying somewhere between Atlanta and the National like Conyers or Madison or somewhere like that. The last thing you want is to be stuck in Atlanta traffic and to miss out on spending more time at the best place on earth.

You can stay in Atlanta or Columbia, SC. Both drives are pretty easy. The two times I've gone, I've parked in someone's front yard on Washington.

Get there early and walk the whole course first. I like to start at 18 and go backwards. Pick a couple spots that you want to go back to hang out. Amen corner and most of the back 9 are usually packed, some of the best places to watch players and relax are on the front. The stands at the 4th green usually have open spots if you need to sit. The space between 5 green and 6 tee give you a great, up close view of the players. The bank on the side of 10 green offers a good spot to lay down and relax.

Definitely go to the par 3 contest, but don't go to the farthest end. It will take you forever to get out of there.

Pack light and don't bring a phone. Take tons of pictures since cameras are allowed during practice rounds. Don't take a picture while Bubba is swinging, though.

Don't expect to see every player. Some will just hit the practice facility, some will only play a couple holes, and some will only play the back. There are boards throughout the course giving you updates on when players are teeing off and where.

The food and beer are cheap and the lines always move quickly.

If you want a souvenir, buy it early. Most people stop at the pro shop on the way out, so it gets packed later in the day. If you don't feel like carrying it around, you can put it in a locker.

Have fun and take it all in. The second you walk in, you know you're walking in to something special.

Do you know anyone that is a volunteer there this year? There are hundreds and chances are you might know someone.

The people in the community open up their homes for the workers and we stayed in one of the extra rooms the year we went.

Just another option for you I guess.

Augusta is an hour from Columbia, SC if you stay in the Lexington area. There are some decent hotels there. of I-20 which is a straight shot to Augusta. I'm not sure where you are coming from though, so Atlanta might make more sense for you. I will say if you can save an hour on Wednesday you will have more time to enjoy the course.

Bring a camping chair but make sure it does NOT have arm rests. Most new people don't realize that you can bring these into the tournament. Better yet, chairs are placed all over the course by patrons and there is a first come first serve understanding. I usually get there, go place my chair where I want to spend most of the day, then walk around.

I have never paid for parking in the ten years I've been going. The free parking is tremendous. The line moves and exit is easy. It is also very close to the gate. Close enough that the $25 Washington Road parking isn't worth it to me. The main gate is tremendous since they redid it. You walk right by the practice area which is second to none then right through the main food and gift shop area and onto the first fairway. I always by pass that and go through Gate 9. It's a slightly longer walk but less crowded. It puts you out on 5 green just above 16. It is the closest walk to Amen Corner as well.

The best way to walk the course is to walk it as its meant to be seen. Start at 1 and go around. If you're interested in seeing big name players, I suggest staking out a spot a few holes ahead of them and letting them come to you. The scoreboard on #1 fairway gives practice groupings. Galleries around Phil, Tiger, Rory, etc. are huge and you can't see anything. Best place to get close to players is on tee boxes.

Sorry for the dissertation. If you want to know anything else let me know. Have fun and report back! I tell people all the time before they go, you will not go to a sporting even that is as organized and patron-centric as the Masters. Everyone is so happy to be there it makes for a great environment.

Go in the gate nearest 16 hole, put your stuff in the Stands by 15 green, very top. You can look down on the tee shots into 16. Leave your stuff in chair, no one will touch it and walk the course. You will not believe the elevation...tv cannot do justice. Enjoy, it is the best place for a golfer. I have been fortunate to go yearly and played it once with my buddies Charles Raulerson and David Duval.

Get off Exit 1 in SC - drive through North Augusta / downtown Augusta to avoid traffic on Washington.

Eat an egg salad sandwich.

Don't pay for parking. The National has plenty of free spots on Berckmans Rd.

580 AM / 95.1 FM has regular traffic updates.

Buy your souvenirs first thing in the morning or the lines will be atrocious. They have a check stand where they will hold all your Merchandize while you watch the happenings and you can pick it up at the end of the day. Only takes them a minute to find your stuff. It's amazing.

Tiger only practices the back 9 on Wednesday, early AM, so if you want to see him, that's the time. He usually plays with Freddy too.

For the Par-3 contest two years ago, we sat between the 5th hole tee and green.... You can watch 3, 4, 5 and 6 all from that spot. The players have to walk really close to you, and there restrooms and concessions in the trees right behind you.

Congrats. It's a magical place. You will want to touch the grass to make sure it's real. Under the big tree behind the clubhouse is a great place to people watch.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'll be coming from New Orleans, so Atlanta makes more sense to me. Found a hotel in Madison for $150 a night. Based off this ill make sure to park for free, hit gift shop first thing, then go from there.

I've contemplated selling them but I feel like I need to go
