but if the union strikes you're locked out with the rest of them

so what if you are non-union, then you're good to work if the union-ers are locked out?

Isn't this kind of what is happening? As a group the workforce is valuable.

As a group, yes. If I am an employee I'm not really giving a rats about tenure, seniority or scheduled raises though. Employers with many employees see it as a convenient bargaining tool, but as an employee that would suck for me.

you could cross the line but it is highly frowned upon. In this industry, cant speak for others, but in this one, you are here more than you are at home. You form good friendships wiht your coworkers and to cross the line you have just become the black sheep and no one will want to associate or help you.

Agreed, I am much more valuable as an individual that what I am paid for. However, it isn't all about pay.

Exxon's (BR) contract doesn't end until April. But there's also a 75 day (or 90. Can't remember) no strike/lockout clause. So you're looking at June before anything real happens

Happens all the time.

Usually for the money and benefits they were holding out for. Then the union settles 18 months later and they are back out of a job.

if you need someone to protect your job maybe you should evaluate your contribution. Unions protect people who don't do their job more than those that come to work every day and put in a good days work. When was the last time a grievance was filed for someone doing a great job.

This ... And I believe most union employees would be surprised at how quickly & efficiently companies would continue operations if outside contract workers & people from other similar companies were brought in to replace them. ... No one is indispensable, and unions attempting to force that imaginary ideal down the throats of corporations generally isn't successful. The days of corporate agreeing to the concept that a union employee can sit on his arse & collect o/t while his machine, equipment, computer, etc. is fricked up, many times due to his own ignorance or his own intention of fricking it up, and while someone else comes in to fix it are for the most part, over.

It won't even take that long. ... Makes zero shits about "union buddies" when the house, cars, trucks, boats, etc. etc. notes are due.

This is issue will be resolved shortly and we will all go back to talking smack about other nonsense.

sufficient replacements can be found, I have little doubt about that.

What they have as an initial replacement is a joke and both sides of the table know that. It fulfills their operational requirements though. Fatigue and moral are the biggest hurdle the company will cross in the event of a strike. Money can't solve those two issues.
