National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Dr. Robert Ballard credited the sinking to Claudius after mapping the submarine. He discovered the way in which the submarine was struck directly coincides with Claudius’ report. In December of 2014, the Navy studied Dr. Ballard’s findings and also credited Claudius with the sinking of U-boat 166. The Navy posthumously awarded him the Legion of Merit, a prestigious military award given for extraordinary achievements.

The blog post states that patrol craft commander was relieved of command, which implies it was for punitive reasons. However, based on the information at this link, he went on to other assignments, including commanding a destroyer and significant staff positions. Since being relieved for cause usually a career killer, and this didn't kill his career, it sounds more like just a regular change of command. Link also has a little more about the Uboat incident. Damn, so Claudius lost his command because he claimed to have sunk a U-boat?
Surprising we didn't have more of a Navy presence in the gulf.

Growing up in south Louisiana in the 50s and 60s, I heard this story many times from various folks who probably had good information.
A professor in college I had mentioned it as well.

Seems wasteful for the Germans to send subs over hear while already at full-blown war in Europe and North Africa.

Nope. You don't get an invasion of North Africa, italy,Normandy without the supplies coming from the US on ships. Battle of the Atlantic was critical

I agree with you. I share your opinion that the historical commentary we are reading is slightly inaccurate in some fashion.

During WW2, it might have been less of a "career killer" to be relieved of command for cause than today, but, still, I think you are correct about CPT Claudius.

The interpretation that he was relieved for some cause, i.e. something that he did that was wrong, just does not make much sense.

What seems more likely to me is that he was transferred out of his command in order to meet the requirement that all patrol boat commanders will go to Anti Sub Warfare school.

All indications are that he did nothing wrong, but, he had never graduated from the ASW school, so, the Navy sent him to that school. To me, this is the reason why he was ordered to relinquish command of his boat.
