My wife and I are moving soon and the mover that were using is also going to pack all of out stuff. Has anyone used a packing service before and can help me know what to expect? Did you take everything off walls or did you leave your house as-is and they did everything?

I just had this done for the second time a week ago.

Pretty easy all you have yo do is put aside what you don't want them to pack and they will wrap and box up everything.

The first time we moved I had them crate the tv's and artwork. Last time I had them box up the artwork and I boxed the tv's. They wanted to charge me $150/TV to pack them for me.

They will not pack or transport handguns, ammo, flammable liquids, or aerosol cans.

I thought it was kind of weird for strangers to pack my stuff the first time we did it but now I wouldn't do it any other way.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Did you do any prep work? I've cleaned up out electronics and unplugged most everything except for our main TV and cable box. Artwork is off wall. Most pictures/frames are put together to make it easier. We haven't even touched the kitchen, books, clothes in dressers or food in pantry. We've probably done more than most people but it's just weird feeling that I'm making these random guys wrap everything.

We're your movers pretty protective of picture frames, glasses, plates and other breakable?

Thanks for the insight btw.

Depends.

When I moved the first time, my wife and I packed everything that was packable and the movers just moved the boxes. They also moved large furniture and beds (after I disassembled the bed frames).

When my house was hit by a tornado, Allstate paid to move all my stuff to storage while the house was gutted and rebuilt. The only thing I had to box up that time was ammo and porn. They'd have boxed the porn for me, but I decided it was time to ditch the VHS tapes and made some dumpster diver's day.

TL:DR - it's cheaper if you box all the shite yourself, but most of the movers will do it for you, at a price.

My wife is 35 weeks pregnant so us packing is out of the question. I was quoted 500 to have them pack everything. We live in a small apartment so there's not too much. Seems like 500 is totally worth it.

500 is just for the packing. Moving is another 600.

Just make it to where everything is in easily accessibly piles, it's clear what's being moved and they don't have to unplug anything

When we packed ourselves, they charged us around $800 to move and haul it all. This was just across town.

When they did it all, I think the bill was something like $8000. Of course, we had a kid, a 2500sqft house, and that included four months of climate-controlled storage, boxes, packing, etc.

Either way, I have a personal library (which is upstairs) and a bad back - there's no way I can do it without killing myself.

But to your point, yes, that sounds exceptionally reasonable.

I had packing/unpacking services at my last move and it was great...they can pack shite in a much more secure way than you can, so there is a lot less chance that it breaks in transit...

fwiw, the one thing that you need to do is to get rid of every single thing that you don't want moved before they get there...they don't decide what you want to move and what you want to throw away for you and they don't want to stand around while you do it...I walked out of the room and they packed a trashcan full of trash from under my desk..

unpacking service is also really nice, but you have to be fast and decisive, as they will work like machines to get things unpacked and won't stand around while you decide which direction you want the couch to face, etc....

I would also let them remove boxes and trash, as that can amount to quite a bit of stuff to haul off...

bottom line is, it is a very nice service, but you can do it all a lot cheaper yourself if you would rather save the bucks...

The pack/unpack movers I had charged by the pound. You sure don't want to pay for it if you're throwing it away soon anyway.

We have a 2 bed 2 bath apartment approx 1100 Sq ft. Movers are packing and moving same day which seems crazy to me. Seems like it would take longer than 3 hours to pack everything up.

Be there when they are packing. I would go hang out at my parents while they were packing my house. When I unpacked at the new house (they only deliver the boxes), i was royally pissed with the way they packed a lot of out items. They stacked 100 lbs of text books on top of a $700 camera, smashed posters, etc. Basically just started throwing crap in boxes and I didn't know until we unpacked. They were very nice and worked quickly, so I tipped them. Wish I would have known the state of all the crap in the boxes before I tipped. These particular movers also used an absurd amount of paper to wrap the breakables. We had 30 garbage bags of packing paper! I'm the only person I know with a story like this, but with what you pay them, its worth keeping an eye on what they're doing.

Nah, they get going assembly line style.

You're still probably going to have all that loose paper and change shite to clean up in the apartment, though. That shite's the worst.

Yeah I'm expecting to still have a bunch of small shite left over which is fine. Guess we'll find out tomorrow morning how long it takes.
