If you had to choose one of these two great, influential bands, who would you choose? Saying who's a greater band isn't really what I'm looking for, more of a if you were stranded on an island in the middle of the Pacific and were offered the complete works of either Alice in Chains or Soundgarden, (with an Ipod to come with either lol) which would you pick?

Same here, I mean, to give Soundgarden the benefit of the doubt, I'm not nearly as familiar with their work as I am with Alice in Chains. So until I am, at this point it would be AIC.

Alice n Changes....They could have been one of the GOATs had Layne Staley lived.

Alice in Chains

It's strange to see old Seattle and N.W. concert posters from the late 80's and early 90's where many of these bands who later would become famous were playing together

Chains. They're better than Nirvana IMO

Soundgarden, but I love both. Cornell's masterful voice puts it over the top for me.

I was never a fan of either, but if forced, I'd pick Soundgarden... I really didn't care for AIC

This but I feel a bit stronger. There are no vocals I hate more than those from AIC. I hate it when Soundgarden dude screams as well.

The best of AIC is better than the best of Soundgarden.

However, Soundgarden are all still alive (only half of the classic AIC lineup is) - and the breadth of the work makes up for the very top end.

(But Nutshell is one of my favorite songs of the past 20 years).

I love both, but I would give the edge to Alice in Chains too.

Well, they're not a pop band - his voice was great for that heavy, post-Grunge era music. I thought he did that style of singing about as well as anybody. Cobain had no range. Vedder was hit or miss. While I don't classify either AIC or Soundgarden as strictly "Grunge" they are part of the broader Seattle sound. Of all those singers, Staley and Cornell are my favorites.

Soundgarden.

Outshined would be my desert island song.

A desert island with only AIC would end in suicide every time.

Alice in Chains ended on a high note, whereas I would argue that Soundgarden managed to get progressively worse with each subsequent album (starting with Badmotorfinger, the band's apex).

If Soundgarden would have further embraced their Louder than Love era sound more, they probably would have had a more reputable reputation among hard rock fans. They just started to sound so watered down towards the end.

Yes he did, he just never used it.
