Went last year
Weather was terrible but still had a pretty good time.
Something I would suggest checking out at least once.

It's great if you know a local. But still can be a blast with the right attitude and will to make friends easy. Something everyone should experience once along with Freds Lounge.

I lived in Eunice the year after Katrina, and have seen their Mardi Gras, which seems to be the same as Mamou's. They did the chicken thing at our house, but I didn't fully participate in the parade. It seemed weird as hell at the time, but I kind of wish that I did fully participate now, as it seems like it would be pretty damn fun.

I did Tee Mamou a few years ago and while it was a cool experience. I didn't get to dress up or chase chickens. I basically just watched the mardi gras krewes have all the fun.
Does everyone get to dress up and chase chickens in Mamou?
I'm going to do Eunice Mardi gras this year... almost got my costume done. Anyone have advice for Eunice Mardi gras?

I went in 95, 96 and 97. Great experience. Lot's of food, great music. Loved the town- frozen in the past. At the time, the only chain store logo in the town was Esso gas.

Tied, my arse.
It's the best boudin in the state, period. Lucky for me I live less than a mile from his store.

I can eat gumbo and get drunk whenever I want. I have no desire to ride a horse, and I have no idea why anyone would even want to chase chickens. Yet every year people hype the shite out of Mamou Mardi Gras.
Let me guess, you think catching beads from a float is the shite, don'tcha?
Different strokes for different folks, dude. Keep yer metrosexual azz in the 'burbs if you can't handle it.

I'm partial to Legnon's in New Iberia.

It's definitely a cultural thing. If you're expecting anything like N.O., or any other city's celebration really, you're in for a shock. If you aren't willing to accept and perticipate in small town "country type" attitudes, do go. Leave your city attitude at home. Its a lot of fun if you like the sort of thing. Bunch of Coonasses just acting stupid and getting drunk. With the right attitude, you'll end up meeting some real nice people, eat some great food, probably be invited to ride on their trailer and possibly be even offered a horse to ride for the day. With the wrong attitude, you will probably end up getting your arse kicked and wake up on Wednesday in a muddy rice field and real sore.
agree completely...it is nothing at all like what you are used to seeing at mardi gras...

Do these "cajun" krewes have a Mardi Gras ball as well? Or is just chasing chickens?
Posted on 1/30/15 at 9:31 pm to Quatre Pot
We did Mamou one year. Showed up and some people let us ride on their trailer. Mixed bag of good fun, good music, and racists. We got off at the mid point and hitch hiked back to town. I was drunk and figured I was in their territory and they let me ride with them, so I better keep my mouth shut and get on out of there. Thanked them and headed on.
That was my personal experience. YMMV. There were some legitametly nice people and good fun, but a few bad apples brought it down for me. I've heard of much better experiences in Eunice. Seems that courir is more open to outsiders.

No, the rural celebrations don't have Mardi Gras Balls, at least, not in Mamou. When we were kids some Mom had that bright idea. A bunch of us were made to dress up like court jesters and escort the "King" and "Queen". Whattabuncha hooey.
Thankfully that little experiment in "big city" Mardi Gras died quickly.
The purpose of the run is to collect ingredients for a community-wide gumbo Mardi Gras evening. So, no, it isn't just "chasing chickens".

pretty much my experience with all festivals nowdays...if I plan to get drunk, I basically stay home to do it...

Well, you post like alot of my older realitives. Most of them have never lived more than 10 miles from where they were born either.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
