Hey guys if you noticed, I said our D was out-coached , I didn't say the players didn't show up and play their butts off because they did! the BAMA O adjusted their play calling, and it seemed to work.

I don't think you'll think this once he is working with our kind of talent.
We'll see, but take off the P&G goggles and set aside your hatred for how Chavis went out (I had it too).
He was good for some last second frick-ups, but he consistently fielded quality defensive units at a time when they spent damn near the whole game on the field.
It is highly unlikely that Steel is at his level.
But we'll see.

For those who think you can numbers blitz a spread option offense and leave RBs, WRs, TEs, or others uncovered, please explain.
The master of half-time adjustments. The true measure of Chavis is what his players think about him and they all love him for putting them in positions to succeed and go to the NFL. They were stunned LSU let him leave. He has sent 72+ players to the NFL in his career. His "blood is in the bricks" of Tiger Stadium and if you said "3rd and Chavis" to any of his players they would likely smash your face in. Chavis started DBU/NFLU and his top ranked defenses had higher scoring efficiency than the O in 5 out of his 6 years.
Amazingly Chavis outcoached a superior Bama this year all game long. TOP was 2:1 LSU because of the defense forcing 3 and outs, 8 punts, 2 fumbles, and one missed FG. The D forced a fumble at 1:13 on the 6 yd line with the game tied 10-10 and Bama undoubtedly about to make another game winning drive. Too bad it was not a scoop and score. LSU ran one play and got penalized 15 yds to the 21 and the offense, miserable all game, could not gain a yard, settling for a field goal, or run any time off the clock because ALA had 3 timeouts. So Bama gets the ball with 50 seconds on the 35 because of a poor decision to squib kick. Again Chavis holds them to a field goal, the best red zone offense in the SEC. Problem: No offense.
Steele is Chavis' best friend and that is likely why he was hired. Until someone proves differently I do not think that Chavis is a plug-and-play replaceable coach and he should not have been allowed to walk while Miles was distracted by Michigan or because he or Alleva would not meet with him and fix his contract to remove the Miles-to-Michigan clause. Chavis certainly did not want to change jobs at 58 and he gave Miles more than 2 weeks to meet with him. Miles said in a presser on Dec 22 that he had no feelings one way or the other about Chavis possibly being hired by A&M for more money. He said all his coaches had opportunities but that he planned to meet with them. He thought they all had a "want" to be at LSU, regardless of job security. Miles finally matched the offer after the Bowl game and after it was too late. Maybe you get too complacent when you have a guaranteed 4.5 million for 5 more years, even if you might also be distracted by a want to go to Michigan for 9 million. Chief was a great coach, just ask any of his players. If he was here, Kwon and Hunter probably stay.

In the 2011 WVU game the D had 2 INTs, 2 fumble strips, 1 turnover on downs, and 1 99 yd punt return. The 5 short field turnovers led to scores and Mo Claiborne's 99 yd KO return. So the Chavis defense accounts for 6 TDs. Like in the NC it looks like an O problem, not D. I personally saw the difference Chavis made and heard the testaments from the players who together with Chavis made DBU/NFLU....just cannot slight that man in any way when we cannot field a modern offense.

Chavis is good but he lost us some games with his 3rd and Chavis playcalling.
i've watched the same games everyone else has and have little doubt there is something to "3rd and Chavis".
but are there any stats to proving Chavis led defenses are prone to allowing longer gains on 3rd down vs. National Averages.

Possibly on the x and o side with Steele but upgrade on the recruiting side.
Coach O was an upgrade from coaching and big time on recruiting.
Overall - if we bring in the talent, we are going to be just fine.

He's right. This place melted down when LSU hired Steele. Hiring Coach O the next day made people forget how much Steele sucks.

Finebama doesn't like it when things don't go bama's way. He's bias don't you know.

Well a 95-24 overall record and 24-24 Won Loss record for 4th Qtr comebacks suggests the offense is operating on a razor thin margin. Now with the offensive revolution and high scoring it makes a balanced, modern, higher-scoring offense a necessity, paired with a top DBU defense to keep pace.
If Steele and O can be as good as Chief, that is enough, having a #1 D is more than enough. But like Steele said, defenses now have to stop many different spread offenses and 3-4 explosive plays a game, bubble screens, pop passes, HUNH, and 3-4 vertical threats that spread the field. Chavis was good at that. Too good. Too many players left early because the NFLPA makes it tempting to try and get that free agency clock started before you get injured, if the family needs money, etc. The odds (1 in 254) are certainly better for LSU and SEC schools, but a degree and then a shot at the first round or anywhere in the league is only going to happen for a few.

quote:Don't agree with this at all. You do realize that was still a 2 possession game well into the 4th quarter, despite Bama completely dominating time of possession and stonewalling our offense? One big play was all that was needed to swing momentum. We never got that play, but that wasn't on the defense.
However, I can also say that same D was out coached in the National Championship by BAMA
I'll also reserve judgement on who will come out better until we see Steele's defense here. It gets easier to call exotic schemes when you are confident in your player's physical ability. I think Steele will be a little shocked when he sees our secondary firsthand, and realizes how much he can go man on the back end. I wouldn't be surprised if he baits the offense into throwing a lot, on the hopes that we can get a bunch of picks.

The only short end of the stick here is Finebaum's genetics.

THIS! Our D held them to 21 points while spending the majority of the game on the field. Had we had a decent offensive game plan we win that game.
Instead we looked completely lost on O and the D can only do so much.
