This has been in the works. They were offering "packages" to any interested employees in the last couple of months

My wife's uncle has been working for BP overseas for 30 years & got offered a package last month

Good friend of mine was planning on leaving BP for grad school and ended up taking one of the severance packages they were offering so it worked out nicely for him

Will this be the beginning of the end of all of this insufferable talk about Texas being the tip of the spear for the entire country's jobs recovery?

Is it insufferable if it's true?

In response to a lot of the concerns of this thread, this wasn't necessarily a bellwether announcement for Houston or the industry as a whole, especially in light of the fact that BP is an IOC and BP has had fundamental issues that make it relatively unique compared to its peers anyway. I think it's unlikely you see Exxon or Shell make cuts of this magnitude.

I've heard through the grapevine that BP was asking for voluntary resignations and providing one months salary for every year you were there. I know other companies are making cuts as well. I had the awkward experience of calling a contractor who had been working with us on a project only to be i formed by him that he is no longer providing services for that operator. Tough times.

And I just moved 6 hours from home, have a 4 month old, and my wife left her job to stay home. We have a savings that could get us through a year or so, but this is gut-wrenching. And we lost one of my projects recently . I know I'm well thought of in the company and feel I'm definitely an asset, but that doesn't even matter right now. Its a tough pill to swallow.

Yep it's tough. Nowadays you just a number. If you don't have a bean counter job I would say your job is not safe at this point in time.
