Current VT commit (Grimes may already have had him on his radar). Even though he's 19 he's rather thin at 6'5" 280. Listed as the 106th best at his position by 247.

That Grimes really isn't that valuable to our staff. Flame away but we had a very talented OL this past year and they weren't dominant by any stretch. There's a reason Auburn fans didn't like him and Malzahn would not retain him.

What do I think? I think it's a last-minute reach for a guy we don't really want because Grimes can't close on the kids we do want. That's two straight years without recruiting a polished tackle prospect and shows the importance of signing homegrown guys like Cam Robinson and Tillery.

Make that 3 what I read on this site doesn't sound positive for the kid next year either.

I doubt this has anything to do with next year. We have room in this class, and OTs are always a bit of a project anyway, plain and simple.

I can't say I'm impressed with Grimes this far but I do think he needs another year before we completely rail him. This is the guy that had a big influence on the Greg Robinson recruitment and that outstanding OL class Auburn brought in that year. Sure he had some help by it isn't like our staff doesn't have people that can help. Maybe our other staff members aren't as good as we think as well. On campus recruiting involves the whole staff so part of the responsibility goes to other staff members as well with missing on these top OL.

I've seen many posts over the past few days using Tillery as an example of failure when that isn't genuine. Tillery was set on ND from the beginning and no one was changing that. Grimes got us a hard look from Jerry and that's all we could ask for. He won over the parents. Jerry made the decision to stick. Grimes doesn't deserve criticism for that one. If he does then the whole staff does because they all pressed him.

this

I don't get the Tillery complaint. The kids dream school was ND.

Need to go all in for Willie Allen next year though.

Exactly. Tillery was all ND before grimes was even mentioned as a possible hire.

I honestly feel people are being to hard on him. I am much more concerned with what the last year class does on the field how they develop.

Also I love the 3 stars we have at OT. Measurables are perfect.

I think next year will be more telling about his recruiting skills.

But he isn't the only coach to speak with these kids. When we miss the entire staff misses. not just Grimes.

Was never impressed with the grimes hire. I thought Kevin M. was a home run. A hall of fame n.f.l. offensive lineman should be able to recruit on reputation if anything else. He knows the position, his work ethic is as good as any, and he has the skins on the wall.

Meh - depends on the frame - if that's filled out, that would be a concern - but, 20% is easily doable for a 6'4" or taller kid at 280 or 290 and 19. So, while 310 is most likely, 330 - 335 is even possible - if the kid has the frame.

And honestly, a 6'5" tackle doesn't need excess weight over 300 anyway - if he has long arms, quick feet and understands leverage - 6'5" and 300, 305 is all you need - although he will have to work on raw strength for the running game.
