Does binge watching a show ruin the experience?

It's a topic I've thought about. Take Lost for example. I won't get into details but there were certain parts where people here asked me (I started a thread about starting it and I watched all 6 seasons in a week and a half) "what did you think of that part?" And it wasn't anything that blew my mind. It got me thinking that they appreciated that scene more because they had to wait and see what was going to happen. Thoughts?

Depends on the show I guess. My wife and I binge watched The first 4 seasons of The Walking Dead and somewhere in the middle of season 3 I was half expecting to come home to my wife boarding up the windows and stocking up on ammo and canned goods. We were totally immersed in that show.

I would argue it enhances it since you are as fresh as possible on all details, guess it depends on the series and the style of the structure of individual episodes.

It ruins the build up of anticipation. But then that's why I like binge watching is that I don't have to wait.

I love it when I am doing it. Then, I feel disapointed after it is over. I like having a few shows that I watch weekly and some that I binge watch.

I would much rather binge watch than have to wait a week to see the next episode. Plus, I don't have to worry about commercials.

I prefer binge watching because all the details are fresh on my mind. That and no commercials to skip through.

I don't think it ruins it, but there are definitely differences in how you receive the show if you watch it live/waiting between episodes or if you binge it.

There are positives and negatives to both, but I prefer binging most of the time.

I think it makes it better.

For example if True detective was released Netflix style, this board wouldn't have had all the time in between the episodes to come up with insane convoluted theory's about the shows meaning and ending which created a bias to each persons own beliefs on how it should/will end

That incredible amount of hype and discussion made it impossible to win on this board. If they do something every one thinks they will do then it's lame and cliche, if they do something besides that then it wasn't what it should've been and everyone feels like there ending was the right one when in fact the writer had a good story to tell if you could digest it without festering over what each episode meant between each week.

It totally pissed me off when it ended and aliens weren't communicating to maggie through artwork telling her to kill everyone and lay out their bodies in the style of Marty's shirt in episode 2. I thought it was foolproof theory.

Seriously though, find those crackpot true detective threads and reread them for some good laughs. People got so ridiculously carried away that it ruined the show for them.

I was gonna post the same thing about True Detective. I watched it when it was airing on HBO and read all the threads and felt a little unsatisfied about some of the unresolved plot pieces. My buddy binge watched after the fact and just felt it was incredible and didn't even notice some of the things the movie board debated at naseum,

On the other hand, I binge watched Mad Men's first 3 seasons, and have watched the last two (one and 1/2) week for week, and I think I liked the binge watching better. It's easier to get absorbed into the universe/time period of Mad Men when you immerse yourself in it.

I think a lot depends on how much discussing it with others can enhance the experience. I go out of my way to find GoT episodes because I enjoy the water cooler talk here each week. I'm pretty happy binging a show like Arrow which I view as a fun action show with not much I want to discuss.

Sometimes it's not good or bad, it's just different. I really enjoyed binging Lost. I didn't have any of the problems that the people who watched in real time seem to have had with it. That being said, I imagine the weekly discussions were quite entertaining and something I'll never get to experience.

Mostly no except for maybe after a season finale and you immediately start the next. Leaves no room for prediction.

But Lost is a great example of one that it would ruin the experience. Half the fun was being pissed off how they would leave you hanging after each episode.

Yes and no. Depends on the show. I couldn't binge watch Oz or Six Feet Under. I actually had a tough time with my Sopranos rewatch. If the whole cast us is comprised of despicable narcissistic assclowns, then a binge watch could detract from the experience.

No, I just recently binged wAtched Peaky Blinders, Lilleyhammer, Marco Polo, and Vikings. I hate having to wait until the next week.

Mother fricking this.

I binged Lost and TD as well as a few other shows that I've heard how the episode threads were here. I would've wanted to blow my brains out reading those threads compared to binge watching.

Also, look at what this board does to Walking Dead or Game of Thrones threads. I don't even bother looking at them anymore.

Completely disagree. Binge watching Lost only made me more anxious to go ahead and go immediately into the next episode.

Not for me, the shows that the plots/characters develop through many episodes I prefer to "binge' watch.

I'm watching "How to Get Away with Murder", if I had just seen the first episode and then made a decision on following, probable wouldn't have been engaged enough in the story-line to continue, would not have chosen that over the latest Sherlock Holmes- Elementary which I like, but I binged watched several episodes of the "How...." and I am now interested in following the plot/sub-plots etc.

Nah, there's enough in real life that pisses me off, don't need the added irritation from fiction.
