No thank you.

But to your larger point, it does kill the suspense for certain shows - a great show stands up (I watched The Wire and Sopranos way after the fact), but I recognize your point. Some great shows I've had a hybrid experience - binge watching a season or three to catch up (The Shield, Breaking Bad and GoT come to mind), then watching the rest as it unfolds - and I can't really tell the difference at the upper echelons.

A more marginal show is probably hurt by binge watching, as it may be artificially inflated if it has good cliffhangers.

I don't think you grow the long term attachments to shows and characters you watched over an extended period

Exactly. That's why it made it so much better to have to wait. It made the anticipation skyrocket.

I really enjoyed binging Lost. I didn't have any of the problems that the people who watched in real time seem to have had with it. That being said, I imagine the weekly discussions were quite entertaining and something I'll never get to experience.

As someone who did Lost both ways, I'll say that binging that show helps a lot because you don't have time to get hung up on a lot of the "questions" (in quotes because a lot of things people bitch about had answers or explanations; they just didn't like them) and the material is more fresh in your mind. There is a lot of stuff about Lost that is easy to forget if you're watching it live over the course of 6 years. That being said, the Lost threads and speculation on this board made it one of the most interesting and fun shows I've ever had the pleasure to watch. Sure, a lot of the discussion was ridiculous and whatever, but it damn sure was fun.

I watched Breaking Bad in 11 days, and that show moved SO fricking slow that I couldn't imagine having watched it live and waiting each week for the plot to move forward at a snail's pace. That was one that I feel like, for me, it was good to binge it.

That's a downside, sure...but just because you binge something doesn't mean you aren't attached to characters though, especially if you sort of immerse yourself in that world and truly binge watch the show (as opposed of watching something here and there).

Does binge watching a show ruin the experience?

It has partly ruined the experience of watching a show live after watching several seasons to catch up.

I watched the first 8 or 9 seasons of Supernatural last summer...whatever it was until I caught up for last season. Then when the first episode of the season aired, it was torture waiting on commercials and then a week before the next one. In addition, if an episode was weaker waiting on the next one was worse.

It almost makes me want to wait until a show has come and gone (like The Wire had done) before I binge watch them all...

I wouldn't say binge watching ruins the experience, but it definitely changes it.

There is a stark difference in people's opinions of True Detective, for example. Us that watched it week to week were able to digest and discuss the show and examine every detail of that episode through multiple watches. That is a testament to how great of a show it was.

People who binged it had mostly a completely different view because they didn't have the time to dissect it and examine all the pieces. They didn't have a chance to stop and smell the proverbial roses.

I suppose this could be said for most series..

I have some shows that my plan is to keep watching them on NetFlix. If they don't renew their deal with the CW I could be screwed though

I'll definitely agree with this.

I usually only binge watch a show once it is completely over (that's why I waited on Breaking Bad to finish before watching). Once you catch up to a show live, it's awful having to wait after you've banged through 5 seasons in a matter of weeks.

IMO binge watching only hurts shows that are able to hide their weaknesses better due to the time between episodes.

I binged Breaking Bad and The Wire. I think I missed a little of the anticipation factor with both, but I do like keeping the momentum.

BTW, I hate commercials too. I taped Justified last night, but I start it at about 9:20. I ff the commercials and usually finish about the same time as the live broadcast.

I "binge watched" the first 3 seasons of Breaking Bad in June-August in June-July, borrowing dvd's from a co-worker before Season 4 started a few years ago. Once I started, there was no stopping. I don't think it ruined anything.

I binge watched Chuck and it's one of my favorites. I guess the type of show really does matter.
