You "borrow" someone's login info...

same for FX, HBOGo, etc

as what was said earlier, smart TVs arent as fluid as having a smart box. I have a roku and Amazon fire tv. To be honest i didnt like the Fire tv when i first got it, but the more i use it the more i like it over the roku. I believe i get a faster and better feed on the Fire but i like both. I wish i had the Roku 3 or which ever one what has the 3mm headphone jack on the remote, it would be nice to have in the bed room when you SO goes to sleep.

What about live sports?

NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX all get OTA for free with an antenna

as for ESPN, just need someone's login info...

but didn't ESPN just announce that they will have a pay streaming service for all their channels for $20/month soon?

It is pretty cool but it drains the batteries really fast.

I actually already have someone's Netflix account info. I have my own Prime login. I can get an HD antenna, but I would need one for each TV right? I can get those channels in Baton Rouge over the air?

I think I would need a Disney Jr. login too. I'm trying to figure how I would get futtbucked by this...I do plan on getting MLB.TV, too.

ETA: I actually already have a Roku. And I'd need one for each TV as well; but one of my TV's is smart. It already has the Netflix/Amazon/Hulu/HBOGo apps.

if you get an indoor antenna, yeah, but indoor antennas suck

just get an outside antenna and put it on your roof and you will get better reception and you only need one, just don't split the feed too many times

yes...this is great for kids

I have a Tivo with lifetime subscription that I got off ebay for around $200.

I pay $55/month for TV/internet. I didn't cut completely because the cost for internet only was $36, so for the extra $19 I get ESPN and all other programming (non HD). I typically use Watch ESPN app for HD though.

However, at this point, we watch very little that isn't on the antenna, so I can probably save the $19 also.

An antenna is an antenna. An old antenna will work, there is no such thing as an "HD antenna".

I am in the market for one whether it be roku or amazon fire tv once I figure out the ESPN situation. Mainly I want to ensure I dont miss any sports on any channel before switching.

Then which device would you reccomend? I have a samsung smart tv so no need for a device there I guess. I need 1 or 2 for other tvs.

Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime subscriptions are obviously recommended. What other apps?

And how does the espn app work if you need a cable subscription?

My answer depends on how technical you and the users of the device are.

Kids and non-technical seem to get the Apple TV. It's very intuitive to use and has all the basic apps you would need. Like a PP already said, you have to authenticate the WatchEspn app with a content provider's login but that is try with any device you use.

The Fire TV out the box is very easy to use as well. The big draw back to the box is that it's remote utilizes Blue Tooth so my current Harmony remote setup cannot control the Fire TV. There are solutions for that, but those are technical in nature.
I have Kodi side loaded on my Fire TV and that is very technical to get setup, although there are several downloads available that automate installing the useful apps to make it easier.

The Roku has a ton of channels available for it. I personally use the Plex app almost exclusively on my Roku and nothing else. It has all the major apps (Hulu, Prime, Netflix, etc). Although easy to setup, it does require more work to get it going out of the box than Apple TV.

In short, if you want easy out of the box and a non-technical user such as my wife that will be using it - get the Apple TV.

If you are a tinkering nut like me, get the Fire TV and open up a whole world of possibilities by side loading Kodi on it

Truthfully, if sports are that important (in HD), it may not be worth it. If you have a WatchESPN log in, you are going to be looking at a 1 minute delay. Sucks for watching live TV.

For big games, I either go somewhere, or watch in standard def...sucks, but I cant stand being behind (texts and all).

Not having to wait 6 months to a year to watch new shows (legally). This isn't a problem with Fox shows but the other major networks haven't even put for much effort.

You can watch new shows on CBS.com the day after.

Recommendation for an outdoor antenna? We have an indoor and I'm always looking to upgrade.

Thanks. I have this guy sitting on top of my TV right now. I'd much rather it be outside.

This is the only thing Roku has over my smart TV. It's much easier to get more apps. I had a hard time even locating the Amazon app on my TV. But, I actually like the TV's interface better. One remote, less delay in clicking the back button, etc..

I have 3 other tvs in the house. May get a roku 3 for the bedroom and a stick that will rotate between outside and my office. If I want I could use the Roku 3 or stick on the smart tv if I like it better.

I use the Roku because all the others suck
