Shot a few ruddies yesterday while hunting open water. At first I though 'diver, tastes like mud or fish, etc' however reading online the bird mainly eats plants and had strong demand for its meat back in the market hunting days.

What say the OB? Good on the plate?

I'm never eaten one but the guy I used to take all of my ducks to said don't bring anymore after I sent him a couple. Lol

That pretty much tells me all I need to know.

The article says he's from California, he mentions his area having particularly more rice fields than the surrounding areas.

Ruddies have always been cook on a plank and serve the plank after throwing the duck away.

Killed a few on Caddo one random year. We breasted them out for gumbo meat.

They are a tough plucking little bird.

Shot a hen in Delacroix. In California they are trash ducks. Eats fine if you breast it out.

Read an article in Delta Waterfowl a few years back that they were the #1 requested duck by restaurants in New Orleans back in the day. Shot a few the next year and pot roasted them and they were really really good.
