I mean yeah he is the winningest coach in history but he only has 4 titles over 30+ years, hasn't made Final 4 since 2010 and has been bounced by a 14 and 15 seed in the past 3 years. Only one title in the last 15 seasons. One Final Four the past 10 seasons. You think at 4 million there would be more titles and Final Fours recently.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say he's made more money for Duke then anything they've paid him.

As a Dook hater:

Progam has been more consistent than most out there. Pretty sure the last time they missed the tournament was the year Coach K sat out a year for surgery in the 90s.

How many Duke hats/jackets/T-shirts have you seen around? Now ask yourself if he justifies his salary.

His teams aren't quite as effective since High school and freshman players made it popular to go to the NBA early.

College sports is a business; coaches don't get paid to win championships. The get paid to help their institutions make money.

I think had they not won it all in 2010, you might have a small case here. But let's face it, the guy is as consistent as just about anyone else.

As an aside, I can't wait to hear one of the local radio hosts here talk about the 1000th win tomorrow; he's a Duke grad and thinks Coach K is an a-hole

Absolutely he justifies it. Without him Duke isn't the same program they are today, or have the same worldwide recognition they have.

What a stupid question. Yes. Undoubtedly. He put Duke on the national map. He. Himself. He is Duke. Without him, Duke is a liberal arts university no one thinks about except for those nerds who do well enough on the ACT or SAT to get into schools like Wash U or Brown, but can't get into Harvard or Yale. He is probably singlehandedly responsible for tens of millions of dollars in university funding.

yeah he wins more games, and has the second most championships of any coach ever.

you probably pay him 1 million dollars less than Kevin Sumlin.

He embodies the University.

So yes he is worth it.

The tourney is a crap shoot. What he has done is unreal. He has also shown he will change his coaching. Like going the the 2-3 zone.

Better question: would coach K be better or worse with the Kentucky 1 and done type talents?
