It dawned on me today that I have a tidy little sum tied up in portable equipment and if I misplace an item, I'm SOL because they're all unmarked. I'd like to permanently label them with my name and tel number. What are some of the best ways to accomplish this? T.I.A.

Meh - I had no idea this was out there. My 1st concern was just some kind of ID tag where an honest somebody could just give me a quick call. But this CopDots thingy is way cool.... Ironically, it was my DSLR I was worried about and the video using one as an example.

A dremel tool with the smallest drill bit. scribble name & # on the back, under, whatever side.

I never knew either. Just spotted it at lowes the other day. Pretty neat stuff. Hope it helps or you find something.

they actually make a dremel engraver that is really cheap compared to a full tool. I think they are about 20 bucks to 25 and they work pretty well.

Do cops really know about copdots enough to make them worth it?

Also sounds like op wants something that anyone could see and use to return the item if it were left somewhere, while the cop dots would be more for theft

Correct. Not real sure about destructive marking such as engraving. That would kill a sale if I needed to do that. Just something a little more elaborate that a Sharpie. I still think CopDots is a must, but the reviews on Amazon and Lowes are not flattering - problems with the dispenser.

I think I'll look for somebody that sells very small brass nameplates. Not sure how I'll attach them.

What about a simple QR code? Could maybe print it or have it printed to a vinyl piece and attached. Then go over it with a clear enamel or something? Less invasive than engraving, and can update information if it's sold/traded/etc.
