I was an adolescent at the time . But I've heard that Shawshank didn't do too well in theaters. Is this true?

It made 28 million domestic on a 25 million budget. It had little to no publicity and Morgan Freeman didn't have the draw he did in later years. Plus it was released in early October.

agreed. personally i prefer shawshank and pulp fiction to forrest gump, but i think forrest gump was more of an "achievement in film making" and deserved the best picture nod.
Titanic in 1997 was similar. LA confidential was a great movie, and probably more enjoyable to most on this board to watch, but Titanic 100% deserved the best picture oscar.

I just didn't like Jenny in Forrest Gump. What she chose to do in her lifetime and what Forrest chose are in opposite end of the spectrum. She didn't have any redeeming quality.

I like SIL so SIL beating Private Ryan doesn't bother me. Other than the beginning of the movie, I don't even like Ryan.
I think the bigger snub was Samuel Jackson losing to Martin Landau.
Finally saw Selma and I don't think it should be nominated for Best Picture so if it wins, then someone got snubbed good. Boycott is a far superior MLK movie.

The biggest snub in Oscar history was without a doubt Brokeback Mountain losing to Crash.
Brokeback Mountain was the most awarded film in Oscar history going into the ceremony. It had won virtually all of the critic awards. It had also won the Golden Globe, the PGA, the DGA, the WGA, and many other guild awards.
It was the frontrunner of frontrunners. No one thought it could be beaten. Absolutely no one. The only reason why Crash was being given a prayer's chance was because it won the SAG for Best Ensemble. Even then it was considered a distant second to Brokeback Mountain.
While Shakespeare in Love beating Saving Private Ryan was considered a big upset, people still saw it as a threat to win. No one saw anything other than Brokeback Mountain winning that night.
