I don't see it as "defending" the Saints but trying to hold Rogers rich little toes to the fire and be consistent yea right.

Opened the link with an open mind.
Read it, and I agree 100%

Patriots' punishment should exceed Saints' in bounty scandal
Um........no.

A lot of "experts" the last few days are going out of their way to explain how the deflated balls didn't give the Patriots an advantage. No one back then was explaining how the supposed bounties gave the Saints an advantage.

That was really good to hear. People see how ridiculous ole Rog was with us, he better bring the fricking heat on the Pats.

"Sean Payton did not cheat," Aikman explained. "There was nothing that Sean Payton and the Saints did that was illegal. And they did not give themselves a competitive edge. I maintain, regardless of whatever was said in the locker room, and in that locker room, is not anything different than what's been said in any other locker room around the league. There's no proof on the field of what took place that guys were targeting players. You can always pull out a play here and there. They were one of the least penalized teams for unsportsmanlike conduct. So there was no evidence that anything translated to the field that they were trying to hurt players. And they did not give themselves a competitive advantage."
Amen.

I didn't like Aikman when he was a player, but his recent work in the media has really redeemed his image to me. Good for him, at least he sees things a little more plainly than a lot of the circus shows in sports media.

To preface, I'm not saying the Saints were guilty of trying to kill other players, but if you're going to ride the "player safety" train as hard as Goodell is, you obviously don't punish an issue such as deflated balls as severely. And as far as competitive advantage, they're not all equal.

I want to see how Rog addresses the coach not knowing(presumed) but is still responsible aspect to this.

Goodell's stated purpose is to protect the shield. The Pat's continue to tarnish the shield. Goodell has covered for them previously. It's time to send a message.

The real question is weather Rog knew about it being done before and warned them to cut it out (ala Bountygate)?

That's the huge thing, it gave us no advantage during games. The Patriots on the otherhand are now in their 2nd scandal of actually cheating and let's see how they get handled as 2 time offenders. My prediction is it will be a slap on the wrist.

Possibly this one infraction isn't as harsh but they obviously have made a pattern of cheating. Just think the things they don't get caught for doing.

The bounties were a horrible topic to discuss at the time, because the issue of player safety was at an all time high.

Right, I enjoy how people are saying "look at the score, it obviously didn't matter". Anyone possibly believes this was the first/only time they did this??

If you ask the question without other context invovled---just a straight-up question without any comparison to other incidents--then, no, the Patriots should not have multiple people suspended, draft picks taken away, and so forth.
But, if you're to consistently apply the "logic" (and, wow, do I use that term loosely here) put forth by the NFL regarding Bountygate and apply it here, then, yes the case can be made that the "competitive advantage" angle makes this worse.
In any event, my respect and regard for Troy has gone up a thousandfold. Great take, Troy!

quote:Well, hold up now...the Patriots are repeat offenders of cheating. I don't think deflating footballs is a felony, but the fact that they've continually been cheating and got caught multiple times could be what does them in. Also, they have been denying. The cover up is usually the worse offense than the crime.
Um........no.
