Coaching basketball 8 year olds

Quick rundown:
Only team with 9 kids
Each has to play 2 qtrs
2 good kids
1 decent
5 below average to awful
1 acts like a dinosaur all game (I'm serious)
Avg 4 pts a game
We go into the 4th down 11-4. One of my good ones goes off and scores 4 pts, and my decent one scores 2. We have the ball under the goal with 5 seconds. Screen to free up kid on a tear. He catches the inbound inside the three pt line in stride, dribbles twice, lays it in. (Only one on team who doesn't stop to shoot. It's an actual layup) he gets fouled as well so we are up 1 with a free throw. Clock kid started the clock 1-2 seconds late, his words, and there are 2 seconds on the clock. Other coaches throw a fit saying the play took at least 7 seconds. Second official is asked and says I saw the whole play, it was at most 4 seconds. Other coaches yell at first official until he makes us run the play over and we don't get the shot off on time.
Was I wrong to tell the coaches their behavior was bad and that they should feel bad?

SPQR tiger has coached little league over forty years, I'm sure he'll be on soon to give sage advice

Is the dinosaur kid related to the LSU dinosaur fan?

I don't go by the it's all about fun. Winning is fun. (I'm not that serious, but we practice and try hard) They might not win another game and the kids were upset because they had one taken from them. We scored 4 pts in all of our losses. 5 in a thrilling sudden death double overtime where we won a second free throw 5-4. Should have been at least 12 tonight.

T. Rex's have little arms. He puts his elbows in his sleeves. Little arms are not good for rebounding.

Mr. Wayne, you got fricking screwed by that other team.
And yeah, you should have told them exactly what you thought.
They had no problem arguing their side to the point that they actually got the ref to call a do-over? Are you kidding? A do-over?!?
No way you should have allowed that to happen.
Here's the thing. As a coach, you are the only advocate for your team. The only one. No one else is going to stand up and argue for your team. Not the officials, not the scorekeeper, no one. It's only you.
Nice guys worry about how they are being perceived and whether or not they are being fair. They consider the other side of the fence. It's the nature of nice, decent people to do this.
Assholes only see one side. Their side. And when nice guys run into assholes, they shouldn't expect assholes to turn into nice guys.
As a coach, never concede a point to an a-hole. It never works in your favor.
The bottom line here is that the clock was started and a play was run that resulted in a score and a foul. If the clock operator made a mistake, then the league can deal with the clock operator later. Your team acted on the time that was on the clock. Did the ref blow the whistle to kill the play when the clock didn't start? No? Then the play counts.
Take tonight's game and learn from it. Next time don't give in.
If the official and the clock operator agree they are two seconds behind, add two more seconds to the clock, shoot the free throw and let the game end from there naturally.

Thanks. I thought it was solved when the 2nd official said no more than 4 seconds, but the coaches kept bitching without me noticing. The ref guilted me in to accepting because the clock kid was from my side, each team is supposed to provide a parent for score keeper and clock keeper, but I didn't realize the other team never sent anyone till after it was over. Both were from my team's families. Luckily they don't post records. I told my team the other coaches cried like girls and the ref cheated. They left convinced we won the game and I'm not telling them differently. Told the coaches what I thought of them and went on my way.

Great lessons you're teaching there.
It's not about winning. It's about teaching sportsmanship and fundamentals at that age. I can only speak for one and it looks like you're severely lacking in it.

How did you get Chris Bosh?

It's sportsmanlike to bend over and take it from the guy that yells the loudest? I told them I was proud of them and their hard work won the game. I stopped some 7-8 year olds from crying over two adults cheating and costing them a well deserved win. The crying jokes put a smile back on their face. That was what was most important to me.
Most of these kids will be LSU and Saints fans. Someone has to teach them about ref bias.

What the frick kind of bullshite league is this? If my kid is 8 and I am watching this game, I honestly don't think my kid is ever showing up again and I'm getting my $50 or whatever back. 8 years old? kids know what is happening at that age, they know this doesn't make sense.
A fricking re-do? What?

I had a soccer coach in U-13s get kicked out of a game once because the ref gave the other team a re-do on an illegal throw in. He was pissed. Yes, the kids are young, but if the clock kid doesn't operate it properly you either have to stop it right away and reset it, or take time off at the end. You can't redo it. This isn't the USSR.

So, just wondering, if he would have missed the shot, would douchebag coach have asked for a do over?
Posted on 1/22/15 at 11:20 pm to Gtothemoney
Wouldn't have said a word.
Posted on 1/22/15 at 11:47 pm to Mr. Wayne
I coach 11-12's and if some coach asked for a re-do my team would've left the court and went home before I allowed that to happen.

No way I let them have the do-over......you should have stood your ground while not making an arse of yourself.

It's my first year coaching and biggest issue was I wasn't 100% sure if that was the league rule. Typically it's people that have never kept the books or run the clock and they figure it out as they go. The kid running it has done it for 3 other games for us and this is his first issue. If I knew the rule I would have just said no more than 4 seconds went off that clock and the rule is in place. I try to be fair and give the other kids the best chance as well. I have gotten possession corrected against my team 2-3 times when the ref missed it to teach the kids sportsmanship. The clock not starting for 1-2 seconds helped them if anything. They at least had the opportunity to roll the ball up and shoot from around the 3 point line with 2 seconds on the clock.
Records are not posted for anyone to see. I will let the kids go forward thinking they got their second win. We play the best team in the league next week and 3 of my starters have to miss for their first reconciliation. At least if they get beat 25-0, they will have it in their head that they won the last one.
