The City Council passed an ordinance banning smoking in many places throughout the city including bars, restaurants and casinos.

Also under the ordinance, the new distance requirements were changed from 25 feet to 5 feet, except for public property, which will remains at 25 feet. Bourbon Street will have no distance requirements.

Under the ordinance, smoking will banned in all hotels and motels, and at the Cancer Survivors Plaza Lafayette Square in the Central Business District. While smoking would be allowed at cigar bars, hookah bars, outdoor areas of bars, restaurants, casinos and electronic smoking device businesses.

Electronic smoking, also known as vaping, was defined as a different activity than smoking, but it was also banned in the same places as smoking.

Those found in violation face a $50 fine. Cantrell said the ordinance could take effect within 90 days.

I don't like it from a political standpoint, but personally I'll take not smelling like smoke when I go out.

It should be the decision of the bar owner, not the government.
