After eating a Muff at Anthony's Deli, I decided to drive by The Velvet Cactus to check it out. Since this was the first time that I actually looked at the location, I had no idea that they were so close to the road (Old Hammond Hwy). I mean the outside diners can exchange high fives with car passengers.

Anyway, the place looks nice.

FYI They have a speed bump just as you leave the parking lot. Bite down, otherwise you will lose your fillings.

Velvet cactus in Lakeview is some of the worst mexican food I've had in my life. It's a good a spot to drink and catch a saints game but man the food is just bad.

I'm sure it'll print money being as people will go simply because it's from New Orleans. Ambience looks nice albeit your pic is hard to see.

They spent a ton of money on this place only to make it as gaudy as possible in the daylight. Hope the food is good.

I'm looking forward to having drinks there. Looks like a Mexican Bulldog (same people, I know). I'll reserve judgement on food until I try it myself...seems most logical.

It won't last. Way to much capital spent on that location to sell Mexican food. And they could have Sammy Hagar making margarita's and it still won't tote the note.

I don't think Baton Rougeans will associate it with New Orleans. It's not like a Acme Oyster House or Galatoire's. (Personally speaking, I wish the latter restaurants would have stayed in NO. I'll take a Chicken Shack over Galatoire's in their current location any f'n day. That Perkins/Acadian intersection is the best area for restaurants in Baton Rouge. Seeing N.O. restaurants there instead of BR restaurants ticks me off to no end.)

I know you know much more about this kind of stuff than I do, but I find it hard to believe that they can't "make money".

Mexican food like they sell has to be a cheap food cost and their prices aren't exactly cheap. And every SOB who goes there is drinking a couple of highly marked up margaritas.

The food is going to be average at best, but if Ninfa's and Superior and all of the other grease and cheese shitholes can keep people coming back, I can't see why VC with a great atmosphere will not do the same.

Yeah the amount of money they must have spent to buy the property, tear down the old another broken egg, and build that place has to be insane.

The set up looks awesome, though.

Read the post below yours for said reason. That whole transaction from buying to today has to be close to 2.5 million.

And it hasn't even opened yet. Add to that the normal costs associated with restaurant startup, payroll, insurance, taxes, food cost, general overhead and you've got to shove a lot of tacos and margaritas out the door to cover that. Deep pockets will be needed and a friendly banker.

And the location, while great area, isn't the best. Hard to get in and out of as well as too many margaritas and a large nightly police presence.

I wish them well but I'm glad I'm not an investor.

It ain't ideal, but they will be fine. Actually, my guess is they will be more than fine. Lots of customers can solve lots of problems. Of course all this hinges on the food being at least average. Hopefully for them and their customers, the food will be great.

Chalet Brandt lasted in that location for more than 30 years. Since Mr Brandt retired six restaurants have been born and have died in that very location. It's the most expensive commercial real estate in town. Access, egress, and parking suck. Add to that the HUGE capital outlay for property and site prep and you best sling a shitload of tacos just to stay afloat!
