Always found Oregon game impressive. Always thought it was miles that suggested to scout team Os to get the team read though.

You have to admit he was part of the problem. He had some major faults that were consistent.

Most DC's have faults, they just have the luxury of having an offense to help them sometimes.

we all know his scheme is pretty bland and relies on great athletes but he makes pretty good adjustments in-game (see 2012 aTm)

that's one area i hope we don't suffer too much. i do think we'll be more aggressive assuming steele is drawing up a game plan mid-week and not recruiting

Chavis got his pants pulled down by Dan mullen. He had no answer for the same scheme mullen threw at him. He also got his nuts cut off by malzahn.

Defense improved throughout the season in 2014, thought he did a good job until the ND game.

Because of personnel changes and improved play by the dline as the season went on.

shite that could have been more on Haley than chavis, getting better play from the dline.

I know people want to think welter was Miles boy, but I find it more realistic he made chavis make the change to beckwith then the other way around.

More I think about it, Miles said the defense needed an answer. Then boom, more pt for Adams and beckwith. That prob had more to do with miles getting involved.

2011 - but that had a lot to do with Tyrann Mathieu
when I thought for a second to answer OPs question, every image in my head was of Badger. so yeah, it probably did have more to do with Tyrann than chavis.

Against A&M with Manziel. He shut him down both times.
he really didn't though, TAM just plays into chavis' passive, "keep everything in front of you" scheme. it's the same reason West Virginia had 533 yards (463 passing) but only scored 21.

TAM had 410 yards in the first game (276 passing), and they were driving, down 17-12, with about 3 minutes to go. they had a 1st and 10 at midfield before an INT by Tharold Simon. one play later, Hill broke a 47 yard TD.

TAM then went 80 yards in about 90 seconds and it was 24-19 with 1:17 to go. luckily LSU recovered the onside kick after that.

This is the kind of stuff that gets forgotten in some of the wins we've had the last few years. Chris's scheme has almost cost us the win several times. The defense hasn't been the sole earner of wins as many would have you believe.

..never ... NEVER in "awe" .. they were too inconsistent and had "breakdowns" at THE most untimely times ( ... like last 2 min of games .... sheesh )

In fairness, if games were 58 minutes long, his D's were pretty good.

Chavis' read and react defense worked well

I hated it. Our defenses in 03 & 07 were aggressive and dominant. I fricking hate losing games on a late drive. I also blame much of that on Miles. His style tends to lead to us playing down to our competition. I enjoyed seeing offenses moving backwards at the end of our games. Steele got it right when he answered the "scheme question" by stating that you have to create negative plays and prevent the big play. We will see if he brings that back to LSU. The critical requirement is having studs at the 3rd level and he's got (2 deep) NFL talent in that department.

Chavis is a solid DC in the right system. He will have to change if he wants to have the same success as he's had at Tenn & LSU. His D will be on the field longer which typically results in more plays and yards. He really doesn't have to field a Top 20 D for aTm to be successful. That said, he does have to stop the opposing offense in critical situations and that was a problem at LSU.

I couldn't stand Chavis's play calling ever since we lost at home to Bama 2-3 years ago. That loss was on him 100% with his prevent defense.

I look forward to a more aggressive defense utilizing LBs to pass rush.

I'm no insider, so I don't know. CHavis defense was always really good with the exception of his "prevent" scheme. He deserves credit.

I've been saying this for years. There were a bunch of "almost" losses that were on the defense too.

LSU Saban's 2003 D or

LSU Chavis' 2011 D?

Both were awesome. Both had a completely different philosophy.

Which do you rather?

I'm not totally sure. I think 2003 was a tougher D.

But 2011 did something I don't think I've ever seen a college defense do... beat the best in the business of every style imaginable. Starting with the Oregon fast paced read spread, through the a slower paced spread in WVU, then the power-dominant offenses of MSU and Bama. Then finished off with dominating performances against Arky and UGA. And duplicating an effort against Bama in the rematch. Remember Bama only 5 FG's until a late TD.

So while I love the Saban 03 D and think it was stronger, the facts say that no D has been a better, more accomplished D than Chavis 2011. It's unreal how that D could take on no matter what was thrown at it.

I think you found the words to express what I loved about the 2003 Saban D. Going backwards at the end of the games.
