On a day overrun by cranes, dust and rubble, in a stadium that barely looked like a stadium, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross on Friday laid out an ambitious vision for Sun Life Stadium, one that includes five Super Bowls in the next 20 years.

Calling it “probably the most important thing I could do,” Ross gave a crowd of about 200 politicians, media members and club officials a glimpse of what the Dolphins are calling the first phase of a $400 million project to modernize the facility and satisfy league standards for Super Bowl sites.

Dolphins’ owner says stadium renovations will lure multiple Super Bowls. Of more immediate concern for Dolphins fans: For the 2015 season, the 100- and 300-level concourses will be renovated and all seats will be new. The gap from the sidelines to the seats will be cut by 24 feet down to 56, and capacity reduced by nearly 11,000 to 65,326, creating a more intimate atmosphere.

Construction — including a canopy to shield fans from the elements — is scheduled to be completed for the 2016 season. Because of the canopy, 92 percent of the seats will be in shade for a 1 p.m. kickoff. Four new video boards will be installed in each corner, and club areas and suites will be renovated.

The voters rejected public funding of this project, so he is paying for it himself, so that's cool.

In general I think Miami is a good location for the Superbowl, but it does seem like a lot of these big events are growing fonder of indoor or retractable roof venues. Still, I'm sure they will get at least one Superbowl out of it.

How many people can downtown and La Jolla accommodate? The commute up and down the 5 is no joke, and I can't imagine for a Super Bowl. Weather, scenery-wise you're right on.

ETA: I know downtown gets a good number of large conventions but not sure how those numbers would compare to the number of people that would flood in for the SB.

Would be amazing, no doubt. Definitely a good reason to add another yearly trip to visit the in-laws.

That's what its going to look like after the renovations are done. As you can see, this is a pic of the team playing against the Jaguars judging by the attendance.

I think the biggest problem with sun life is the location. decent seats and easy access to pissers and beer is all I need out of a stadium. I dont need it to be fancy, its a football stadium. but when the shite is out in the middle of nowhere in the hood, it sucks.

I thought i just read somewhere that stadiums needed a minimum of 70k seats to host a super bowl?

Looks like one of the stadiums from the World Cup in Brazil.

The Super Bowl is now just a reward for building new stadiums. They'll get one just for doing it, and then they have to wait in line like everybody else.
