I'm trying to go hunting in Mississippi this mOnday and they're telling me I need to get a hunter education license/number before I can purchase a 7 day all game permit. The only way I can find to get one, according to their website, is to take the online class and THEN sit in a classroom for 3 hours, which isn't an option on this short notice. Is there a way around this? Anyone have experience with this?

I'm adamant about going hunting and really do not want this bullshite to get in the way. No offense to any residents of Mississippi here, but I highly doubt everyone hunting in that state has sat in a classroom for 3 hours, let alone 10 (which is the non-online education course requirement). I have a hard time believing many hunters in most states have sat through those classes.

I used mine as an ice scraper this morning. Sat in there all day back in '96.

How old are you? If you are older than a certain age (I forget exact age right now) you are "grandfathered" in.

I'm 27 and had to take the online portion and then do the classroom as well. Only took about an hour in the classroom. The BS part is they rarely offer the class and it was a 2 hour drive to the closest one for me.

I do not know of a way around this other than just being an outlaw.

I did when I first got my liscense. two saturday classes - all day with test at end. That was 17 years ago. Now you can do the whole thing online here in Alabama.

Do they not recognize a LA hunter safety course? Does LA have a hunter safety course?

28. Not getting grandfathered in I agree it's BS. There aren't any locations near where I'm going to my knowledge, and there isn't enough time either. I doubt any 'classroom' will be open on Sunday anyway, so it's a load of shite in my opinion.

How egregious/risky is that? We're going on a private lease, fwiw.

Thanks. I'm going to see if LA offers a purely online one.

Normally, I would say you'd be fine but guy I know had green jeans walk out on him just a week ago while he was hunting in sight of a feeder. On private land.

Definitely a risk but the odds are in your favor imo.

Do you even hunt? All states require a basic hunter education class be completed in order to buy a liscence! If you have one from another state, they will honor it.

Not sure if you have ever purchased a lisc before but if you have and not been asked to provide your hunter ed #, then you have been getting by somehow around the law.

I have no hunting experience, I thought that was obvious enough. I've been dying to start, and I'm really pissed that I may have to pass up this opportunity, as I don't know when I'll get another chance.

LOL! Ok. That explains it then.

The fine should you get caught will likely be less than the cost of the liscence. Good luck.

That's good to hear. If it was just me I wouldn't worry but I don't want to put anyone else (ie my hosts) in a bad position. I'm going to do the Louisiana online portion and try and do the classroom tomorrow so I get a legit LA hunting license. Thanks for the advice all

Most states recognize hunters ed training from any other state. I think there are just a couple that do not. Also, I thought that the age requirement was pretty standard also, except for a couple of states. Most are something like born before '69 (?) and you are exempt. I believe Colorado is before 1945 or sometime around that.

the fine for hunting without a license is definitely not less than the cost of the license.

Thanks for the heads up. Obnoxiously, there are no hunting education classes in MS or LA being held this weekend to my knowledge.

Yes, LA does have one. Grandfathered in if born before 1969 I believe. I just missed it...Born in 1972....I took mine..and yes, Alabama recognizes it. Texas did too.

I just wish I would have gotten a lifetime in Texas and a Lifetime in LA before I left. I'll make sure I do so in Alabama before I leave this place.

Typically the classes are held during the summer, before hunting season.

Well, I'm officially registered for a hunter education field day in Baton Rouge next Thursday. Not sure how that helps me for this weekend though

I read the Mississippi statute which says that if you get fined for hunting without a license, and then show up at court with your license, the fine drops to $100 or is dropped altogether. In a worst case scenario, if I went this Monday and got 'caught,' I would ideally have a license by Thursday to bring to court with me, assuming the court date would be after Thursday.
