Jordan would have put up better numbers in today's NBA. T or F?

I hear this a lot because of rule changes like hand-checking. But is it true? Are there stats to back it up?

I'm sure there are many players who played through both eras.

Did their stats significantly increase?

Partially because he's been past prime though, yeah?

Less defense in today's game so I would think his numbers increase but who knows.

In his prime, I think he would have similar numbers.

I think his game would translate and that he would do very well. I do not think he would step in and average 40 to 50 points.

I mean I suppose he could but it would come at the expense of his team, just like with any other superstar player.

From what I'm seeing, points per game has gone down.

I think his numbers would be about the same if not a little lower.

when Jordan was getting out the Euros were just coming in... now the league is deeper than ever on defense

also Jordan never faced D aided by computers like they are now, with analysis of his hot spots and shot charts

Yeah there was hand-checking and most physical play but you forget Jordan got away with basically everything.

I don't really follow basketball all that much, but I seem to recall hearing that defense was less during his time. It was more physical, but there were differences in rules and legal defenses that allowed for higher score games. I heard it argued that was part of the rejuvenation during that period. Or maybe that was the period really early in Jordan's career or just before.

Hand-checking was done away with in the 70's

He is also about twelve years old, so there is a strong possibility Jordan retired when he was an infant.

Less in my opinion. Less athletic defenders and Jordan's style was not as common back then with the way he attacked the basket off the dribble from the wing.

Also, what were league averages in points per game back then? Seems like there were a lot more 120-118 type games in the mid to late 80s. Also think defenses were less physical until the end of the decade when people tried to adopt Detroit's style after 89.

He would dominate by todays standards... BUT the Chicago teams he were on[aside from Pippen] would get creamed by a team like the Spurs. To much quality depth on most teams that are now way better athletes.......

The original hand-checking rules were passed in the 1970's and put guys like Norn van Lier and Jerry Sloan out of business.

I don't need a computer to tell me Jordan is going to take a turn around jumper/fade from the elbow/wing

They did make changes to the rule in the 70's but hand-checking was not eliminated in the 70's.

It wasn't eliminated until sometime in the 90's. I think the late 90's.

early jordan would have been forced to take more jumpers, but i see him getting $$$ at the line as well. similar stats, but fewer FGA and more FTA and better efficiency stats

i think older jordan would have had some issues dealing with the defenses on an individual level. his post-fade would be tough against advanced modern Ds with their rotations and how iso it was
