I've been the last four years, and the headliners this year are the weakest they've been in all of my years going. That said, it's pretty strong outside of the headliners. The headliners are the least fun part of Bonnaroo, in my opinion. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's amazing to see someone like Paul McCartney, Elton John, or Radiohead at the What Stage. The fun in Bonnaroo is catching the smaller shows where the crowd is more involved, though. For example, I saw Ludacris three years ago, and it was amazingly fun. He didn't realize that he had that many fans there, and you could tell he was really pumped up by all of the love. R. Kelly was pretty hilarious and fun to go to. I don't even go for the rap shows, but they always end up being some of the more fun shows. Not to mention, I've seen everyone from Mumford (back in 2011 when they were really taking over) to The Strokes to Gary Clark Jr. (when he had played Festival International a few weeks earlier). It didn't matter how big the show was. It was about stumbling onto fun arse shows that you don't expect on top of the people you do want to see.
Not to mention, last year with the World Cup set up it was amazing. Also, as a comedy buff, I've got to see dudes like Hannibal Burress, Mike Birbiglia, and a ton of other great comedians. If you just look at Roo for the headliners, you're really missing out. You're right in the fact that it's much more mainstream, but it's not all necessarily bad. Two years ago was the least fun I've had, and it was the most rock-centric set they've had since I've been.

The headliners suck because the touring industry is in the shitter. Aside from them it's the same damn bands from every other festival.
Bonnaroo has had some amazing lineups, but this year looks like a pass.
2006 and 2012 were amazing.

A lot of the current mainstream rock bands have been touring in a rock festival format with slight changes from place to place. I think that has something to do with the same headliners playing the main festivals. For instance:
This is similar to what old Voodoo used to be in terms of depth and current rock.

I went to the first two. The magic was gone after the first year. Our little secret was out. Great shows, but it just felt like the vibe was gone. Everyone at the inaugural knew we were experiencing something special and it was completely under the radar.

Those total hambland lineups look great and all, but I think the festival really hit the high mark when they started expanding into more diverse genres starting in the mod aughts. That exact modus operandi came to bite them in the arse though.
One thing Bonnaroo is still king of is the late nights. No other festival even comes close in that regard.

To your point, Heady... it seemed like a niche festival for the jam band set early on, hence, I never had a desire to go there.... But, like many, the organizers probably saw the way this festival circuit was going and decided to cash in and make it one of the many homogenized festivals now, around the country...
It's basically the same big festival, that goes around the country with a different name in each stop...

Looks like a good lineup. Not Bonaroo's fault that there aren't many good new bands out now.

Heady, the guy has a point. Don't try to pass it off because you think you contribute a lot to this board.

Agreed... but everyone needs their thing..
I'm trying to remember the name of the jam band festival that was counter to Lollapalooza back in the 90s.. drawing a blank
