The Death of Bonnaroo

Once the headiest music festival in the United States, Bonnaroo is in the midst of a very sad decline (kinda like LSU football ). I haven't been on the farm in six years, but really had some great times out there.
Shows like Radiohead's truly legendary marathon 2006 epic, the final appearance of the Beastie Boys, the star-studded Gov't Mule late nighter ft. members of Led Zeppelin and the Grateful Dead. The new wave of jam bands highlighted by annual late night ragers by stalwarts like the Disco Biscuits, Sound Tribe Sector Nine, moe, Galactic, and Umphrey's McGee. Eclectic performances by the Meters, Ween, David Byrne, and DJ Shadow. Phish's debut upon their return in 2009 to grace the mainstage of a festival modeled after their own. The emergence of local Tennessee rockers My Morning Jacket, who evolved from playing the smallest stage to eventually headlining.
I guess everything comes to an end.
It's not a complete shitfest. Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood, Mac DeMarco, Tycho, My Morning Jacket, Gary Clark Jr,etc.... I guess it's really just the over-saturation of festivals that doesn't get my hyped about this. Weak headliners too.

You state that Bonnaroo is losing it's "headiness" but then go on to list Radiohead, Beastie Boys, and My Morning Jacket as some of the highlights from previous years you've attended?
I count at least 24 acts I'd really like to see live and over half will give amazing performances based on previous concerts I've attended.

Pretty good lineup to me.

Those bands look like the reincarnation of Jerry Garcia compared to Kendrick Lamar and Billy Joel.
And yeah, I went 06,07,and 09 - right when the festival was changing from strictly jam bands to a more eclectic lineup. Those years still had tons of jam bands but added alternative, hip hop, and funk. It was a fine line that they successfully rode for years before stumbling sometime earlier this decade.

I saw that Jay-z and Beyonce were headlining as well from a few twitter pages. I haven't seen that confirmed anywhere though.
I like a lot of whats on the lineup, FWIW. I also find the headliners underwhelming.
Robert Plant
My Morning Jacket
Alabama Shakes
The War on Drugs
Gary Clark Jr
Sturgill Simpson
Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood
Mac Demarco
Spoon
Ben Harper
I do like Florence Welch, I'll admit
Rhiannon Giddens

Do you constantly bitch about all the music you don't like? Bonnaroo jumped shark years ago. What were you expecting? If someone posts about music you don't care for, it's "shitty music" to you.
"Music is neither good or bad" -You should know who said that
We get it, dude. Why don't you aim that energy at posting something positive about the bands that YOU like instead of saying how terrible everything that doesn't suit your tastes?
You spend so much energy dissing bands such as WSP when no one else really gives a shite-people are going to continue having fun liking what they like regardless of your posts.
You bash bands and say how bad they are and claim this superior taste. You have an inferiority complex, dude. You'll probably say how I don't know you and to not take you seriously, but all you seem to do is bitch about bands you don't like.

They cater to the younger generation, this is an insane lineup for an 18-24 year old trust me!!

Once you get past the top line it is seems decent. Billy Joel, Mumford and Kendrick Lamar I don't care about at all. If it's gotta be electronic you could do a lot worse than deadmau5 I think.

Maybe he'll just play Strobe for an hour. I like that one.

Much better than the Hangout lineup...but I guess its hard to compare due to the size difference

Oh.. And Run the Jewels! Love love love.

I saw Kendrick Lamar .
He was okay. And I loved him at the time.

What's with these random metal bands Roo's been throwing in the past few years? Slayer this year, Meshuggah last year, Mastodon a couple years ago. Who wants to see these bands at this festival?

Bonnaroo still sux though. If I wanted to have a heat stroke in the middle of a sandstorm with 50,000 people and no power I would go North Africa

I dunno man, I guess I unrealistically want it to return to the golden age? Not sure what else to say there.

I've posted enough appreciation threads and given away too much music on this site to even warrant a response to this.

Or you could go to Williams-Brice Stadium.

I'd love to see Mastodon. Their music sort of fits in with the vibe; experimental with off-kilter themed lyrics. I wouldn't even necessary call them straight metal. Their newest album was amazing, as well.
