I seem to remember Tennessee fans coming on here and telling us how Chavis was past his prime and how we should be worried about the hire. He turned out ok for us (w the exception of third and chavis of course).

Chavis was actually more amazing at tenn that I thought.

even in his final season his last two games he gave up like 13 and 10 points

to put Kevin Steele in the same class as John Chavis is laughable. Chavis had proven success before LSU.

well he had 1 year as a DC, and another as a Co- DC. He had some NFL experience as a position coach most of the 90's

Steele has coached in the NFL, he's been an NCAA head coach, and has had a big role in the best defense in the nation and best defensive coach in the nation for 4 seasons.

Im not saying Pelini's was bad, i just think Steele's is better

And though the Volunteers were staggering to a 5-7 record, Tennessee's defense ranked third, fourth and 10th nationally in total, pass and scoring defense, respectively. Suffice to say, Chavis did not have to wait long for LSU to come calling after Vols head coach Philip Fulmer and his staff left town.

Chavis also seems to have an eye for leaving when it's time.

How much of a role could he have had as a non position coach? 4 seasons?

But the difference is that Pelini was moving upward.

Steele has moved upward, and failed back down.
