Some family and close friends and I are planning on a culinary/city tour of the South this late Spring. We need help and suggestions. Where should we eat and drink. Anything we must see or skip? Any hidden gems we should check out along the way?

Here's our loose itinerary....

-Fly into Jacksonville, FL in the AM. Rent a car and head to:

1. Savannah, Georgia We'll stay 1 day. Then drive to

2. Charleston, South Carolina
We'll stay here 2 days. Then drive to

3. Atlanta, Georgia
We'll stay here 1 day. Then drive to

4. Nashville, Tennessee
We'll stay here 2 days. Then drive to

5. Memphis, Tennessee
We'll stay here 1 day. Then drive to

6. New Orleans, Louisiana
We'll stay here 2 days. Then fly back north.

ETA: I guess I should have added that we are all in our mid 30's. We picked this route because we'll be able to gain a hour the second leg of the trip and we felt we would "enjoy ourselves (booze)" a little more in the cities on the second leg of the trip

An absolute must in Memphis is Gus's fried chicken.

Maybe Husk in Charleston?

In Nola I would do an "experience" place, like Galatoire's on a Friday or Commander's Palace. Neither are the very best in town, but they are an experience.

The original spot is quite good....however I would say Uncle Lou's with the special sauce is a home run and a tad better.

Can't go wrong with either.

Atlanta, Georgia

Fork, your other cities are a good choice, but if you are looking for city-based iconic foods, may I suggest swapping ATL with a wild-card of... I dunno... maybe Athens, Augusta, or another day in one of your other locations?
You can find fancy restaurants in ATL where you can spend lots of money. But as for something that uniquely says "Atlanta"? It's Waffle House, Dunkin' Donuts, and whatever you are eating in your car while stuck in traffic on I-285.

I honestly don't like Gus's Fried Chicken. I know its a big thing, but it is too spicy for me as far as fried chicken goes.

You have to get ribs in Memphis. Go to Corky's, Rendevous, or Central.

I agree about the "experience" place in New Orleans. Go to Commander's Palace for the fancy meal and then get a po boy at Parkway or R&O or something. PLEASE don't go to Mother's in the CBD for the po-boy. Or the Acme Oyster House in the Quarter.

You should get a bowl of gumbo and a bowl of red beans and rice somewhere, too.

The Old Pink House in Savannah would be a good choice.

River Street yes. Rocks on the Roof and Top Deck

Public. Very mediocre.

ATL is not NYC, Chicago or NOLA, but to suggest Athens or Augusta? There is nothing in either of those towns you can't get in Atlanta. If you want to go to a cool college town, tour of Terrapin Brewery, etc. Athens is great, but it's only a great culinary town for its size, not in general.

Skip Disgusta, GA

There are 100s of places in ATL just as good as the best in Athens. Don't get me wrong, I love Athens.

Also, while in Nashville, get a drink at the historic Oak Bar in the Hermitage Hotel. Also get drinks/food at Patterson House. Best place I ate while I was there was Rolf and Daughters.

You'll be coming through Jackson around lunch, right?

I'd check out somewhere like manship, walkers, Lou's, pig & pint, saltine, or babalu

Keifer's for something casual

Big apple inn if you're feeling brave

No. No. Yes. If you're doing BBQ, you need to consider Central, BBQ Shop or Cozy Corner. Best all around IMHO is Central.

Other places to consider in Memphis - Gus's, Iris (fine dining), Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen (fine), Hog & Hominy (casual).

Cozy corner burned two days ago. Really sad bc those are some great folks. Don't go to Beale street. Gus' fried chicken is a must. Uncle Lou's is great too but harder to get to. Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman own Hog and Hominy, Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen and just opened up a third restaurant/ butcher shop called Porcellinos. Check out Overton Square in Midtown. Lafayettes has live music every night and kelly English owns Restaurant Iris and The Second Line in the area too.
