Kevin pelton give the trade a C grade pending whether pondexter can regain his 3pt shot

seems fair considering pondexters contract and the fact that aside from green all the moving parts of the trade are C level parts

I can't believe there has been this much discussion on the topic. Rivers and smith are D league players, Pondexter proved to be a rotation guard on a playoff team and is a position of need for us. its a solid small scale move.

He's got 3 years left on his deal at $3.5m per year. Rivers was expiring.

Pondexter is not going to put us over the edge. And we are now stuck with him

If he can contribute at all, 3.5 isn't astronomical these days. Plus he can be moved. And I think, more likely than not, he can improve our bench this year.

that's next to nothing. also I wouldn't be surprised if he was brought in to make another trade work.

Anyway my point is…wtf did people think we would get for Rivers and Russ Smith? At least with Pondexter you have a chance of him regaining form and becoming a cheap contributor on the bench.

But more than nothing. If he works out it's a good move, if he doesn't you're eating into cap space with a guy you could have gotten similar play out of for the minimum. I still have yet to see anyone in this thread say "yeah I've watched him and he's not as bad as his numbers indicate." The only poster that has watched him and said anything was RTR who basically told us "Good luck, hopefully a change of scenery will help."

In this case I think the question is would $3.5 million worth of cap space be more valuable in the next 3 years than Pondexter. It's not Pondexter vs. Rivers, it's Pondexter vs. the cap space he takes.

well, he has been very good at the long 2 in limited attempts this season. maybe Dell feels like he can basically provide that same energy as Cunningham? that's the only thing I can think of. what was the injury he had last year that he's coming off?

Sure, but you can spend that money to find someone who can actually get minutes in FA. You can target a guy that fits what you're trying to do.

Everyone wanted Anthony Morrow back after last season; a guy like that makes the same amount as Pondexter. A vet PG like Jameer Nelson that we wanted? Under $3m per. That cap space is more important than people think. You need that $3m player to be a legit contributor

While I agree, wouldn't the increasing cap reduce the effect of QPon's contract? I realize we dont know how much it will increase, but it's something to take into consideration

First, this takes stretching Gordon off the table IMO. Honestly that may have never been on the table from the team's perspective, but turning Gordon into a Green was a very real possibility.

Second, $3.5 will become roughly $2 million under the new cap in 2 years, so it's not like this move will cripple us, but I think there is reason to doubt how much QPon gets you above a minimum guy, and if he doesn't get you much, why over pay for him? It's not like Salmons where he's an expiring $2 million that can be valuable as trade filler.

Yea, i still think Pondexter is movable and his salary may help as filler in a bigger trade. but if the plan is to keep him he is still a position of need.

I mean, i hear what you're saying, i just don't think Pondexters 3.5 mil is going to handicap us come free agency. there is a reason he was brought in beyond just dumping rivers.

I just dont see a team taking on 3 years of Pondexter. He basically has no value unless he's going to a team like us, with no talent at the 3. Basically, we have to hope he does well bc we are probably stuck with him now.

was that all RTR said about him? And I know everyone has been saying that QPon is a good defender but do we have anything concrete to back up that claim?

No

People say the same shite about a guy like Aminu. Players with no discernable NBA skill get ambiguous titles like "good defender" or "hustle guy" or "does the dirty work"

To the knowledgeable, this isn't ambiguous.
