1991 season:

.319 batting average and 187 hits, both of which led the National League. He also hit a career-high 22 home runs and a career-high eight triples. Despite his impressive statline, Pendleton was not selected for the All-Star Game. He was, however, named the National League MVP.

His stats for '91 don't come close to what most would consider MVP caliber. And what MVP doesn't go to an All Star game? Was '91 a mere anomaly?

TP was 3rd among NL position players in WAR, on a team that surprised everyone and won the west, and Bonds had what would essentially be looked at as a "down" year for him.

He was definitely worthy of MVP consideration.

They try to pick the most deserving guy each year. No use comparing/contrasting year to year. It's like champions year to year in each sport. The best team that year wins. Who cares how they stack up against other years in a hypothetical sense.

Yeah, because all-star voting always gets the best players in the all-star game

Well Andruw Jones should have won it in 2005. You win some you lose some.

Chipper Jones didn't make the all star team in 1999. He pretty much won the MVP in September by almost single handedly destroying the Mets and leading Atlanta to another division title.

He was pretty much without question the MVP of that team and without him they probably don't have the season they had. Others may have had better stats (I'm not looking that shite up) but he was a real difference maker for that team on the field and in the clubhouse.

To be MVP you only need 1 good year!

Of course most fans only mention offensive numbers when rating a player. But you don't play 15 MLB seasons and not be a good player!
