Must have 2 things:

1. An iOS and Android version that is free.
2. Ability to check mark items once they are bought.

Need: Ability for my wife and I to share a grocery list, or any type of list, and then for either of us to be able to mark items off said list as we shop.

Go.

Android app called Our Groceries. Not sure if it is available in iOS, but it has all the features you need.

My wife and I use Evernote for this. You can create lists with check boxes. We just share a login.

Actually, Google Keep is great for this since checked items grey out, but I don't think there is an iOS version yet.

Keep app is nice, and when I tell my moto 360 to take a voice note it puts it in there for me. Also list can be shared, but not sure if it works on iOS.

My wife and I used to use Cozi. It worked pretty well...haven't tried anything else to compare, though.

Wife and I use Wunderlist. iOS/android/web browser. My wife will make a grocery list and I'll go to the store after work. Check items off as I go. She can even list each item and a description, like where I might find it in the store. Very handy.
