The Argentina forward missed an open training session on Monday, sparking rumours of a potential exit from the Catalan giants.

Messi is reportedly unhappy with the running of the club by head coach Luis Enrique and the Barcelona board, with the club announcing on Wednesday that they will hold new presidential elections over the summer – a year earlier than scheduled.

Rumours of a move to Chelsea gathered momentum when Messi followed the club on social media, but Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Balague says he may well stay and even if he does leave, Chelsea probably can’t afford the total cost of luring him away from Camp Nou

“All that has been a possibility and still is a possibility – of course there are clubs that approached Messi’s family to see if they would be willing to go, especially from the Premier League.

“There are not many clubs that could fork out about 690 million euros, which would be his buyout clause and his wages – PSG and Real Madrid, some say Chelsea but I’m not sure, certainly Manchester City – but the fact he’s never been this close to leaving doesn’t mean he will leave.”

City has been working hard to get him to transfer, but I don't see Barca letting that happen. It seems much more obvious that they'll just fire their coach instead.

How the hell? Say you double Bale's fee and double what Messi makes now for 5 years. You're at 200 fee and 200 wages. Is his buyout that fricking big?

700 mil? Man city would be crushed under fair play rules?

Also, i wonder how bad Roman is getting killed by OPEC and low gas prices? That would certainly affect Chelsea down the road, end of this season?

With the amortization of the fee over contract years and the huge increase in sponsorship I think it's far more feasible than most would accept. Many suggest Messi would basically pay for himself. I think the bigger hurdle is convincing him to leave.

He's not getting along with Enrique and has told Barça it's either him or me. They've apparently had some heated confrontations at training sessions. I think Enrique is gone before long.

$700 million isn't feasible, but his value to the club can't be or into monetary terms. I don't think there's a solid valuation for what his image and his personality brings to the club. I'm pretty sure it's all just a power play, but it would be a huge controversy for them to let Messi get away. I'm not saying he is bigger than the club, but he is their biggest asset in my eyes.

Would be interesting to see how Chelsea would do it, I would imagine Hazard goes the other way and they put him in the 100m region in the swap, and his wages are maybe done the same way Beckhams was in that alot of the money comes from a % of his merchandise sales.
