I've been rewatching The Wire and throughout the seasons, mainly 4 and 5, Burrell and Rawls makes subtle references about Daniels not being all "saintly" as he appears.

My question is do they ever explain what dirt they have on Daniels?

Season 1 they have a file on him being not so clean when he was on the East side, probably money, considering his nice house.FBI had a file him that McNulty was aware of. No specifics given.

Kept him in check until he decided in Season 2 that if he was going down then he was going to bring S.O.s who much dirtier down with him.

McNutlty's FBI guy (can't think of his name) said Daniels had about 100K more in his accounts than someone with his ranking should have.

That's all I remember.

The most specific Daniels ever got about it essentially saying "everybody was doing it".

I was rewatching the first season last week. I only remember the FBI (or was it DEA) agent who was friends with McNulty mentioning that Daniels had "about $200k (?) more in liquid assets than any police lieutenant should" or something like that. It is also said that it's possible that it could be legit though. There were also references to him hanging something over other guys heads in season 2 like the other poster mentioned.

I really don't remember it ever being revealed what exactly he did or if/how dirty he was.

I'm on season 5 now and I just watched the episode about him as a candidate to replace Burrell. His ex mentioned that they could bury both of them if he gets out of pocket.

What was odd about the money angle was how pissy Daniels was with Herc and Carver when he thought they had stolen some of the drug cash; but in the Season 1 episode it was only lost under the spare tire in the trunk. I think that he had probably helped cover up something internally instead of anything to do with how much cash he had in the bank. Just my opinion - could be wrong.

Isn't he also in the gay bar in the back?

I interpreted this as being 100% what Daniels did in his past.

He took drug money for himself. Probably on a big bust. Maybe a bust they never reported.

Rawls was, but I don't think they ever mention it again.

IIRC, this was what I thought as well.

All of these Wire threads lately are REALLY giving me the itch to go rewatch the series. I've been watching a ton of scenes on youtube lately.

Makes sense. I figured that with his law degree, he could have done something more clever/complicated than that, but he may not have had the degree when that extra money came up.

Deep into S2 on this rewatch. I had forgotten that Carver and Herc had taken a good chunk of money from one of their drug house busts. Looked like it could have been around $10k total.

The kicker was supposed to be that he was married and doing it, not that he was gay.

You had plenty of gay characters on the show, one more doesn't do anything for the plot. But a character so obsessed with order, chain of command, , and knowing your place, who is a married closeted gay is 10x better.

I always thought it was so weird showing Rawls in a gay bar and never following up on it in any way, shape or form.

To me, it was just like Brother being a NoI believer. Doesn't change the plot one bit, but it just adds a wrinkle to the back story.

For the record, Brother is maybe the worst character in the series besides Sergei and his horrendous acting. At no point did Sergei ever make the correct decision and we are led to believe that he used his personal cell phone to make all his organized crime calls, rents cars in his own name to commit crimes, and this is all under the noses of the faceless, brilliant international drug/smuggling cartel.

Jimmy's FBI contact said that Daniels had some cash stashed away - more than what he should have for his pay grade.

They never really elaborate

In season 5 the FBI report ends up in the hands of the female councilwoman and she gives it to Daniels wife. Daniels says its not nearly a enough for an indictment but from the conversation it appears that the report would raise enough questions to keep him from being confirmed as police chief and keep Marla from winning re-election and/or staying in politics.

My best guess, some funny business with drug seizures and guys playing fast with department procedures and evidence.

His wife in season 2 also mentions something about his dirty days or something similar when talking out on their front steps.
