I just binge watched the first season of Game of Thrones. It was cool, and I've been missing out, but I also like to read, so I'm thinking about taking the dive. For those who have read the books, would it be better to read before watching anymore episodes? Will the first book bore me since I know what happens?

Well, considering there is a 1000 page thread on the series on this board, I would say that interest is probably pretty high.

Absolutely

Not at all.

I had been after my wife to give the books a shot for years. She watched the first episode of Game of Thrones and started the books that night.

I'd stop watching the show and just read. You can likely finish the series before the new season starts. I imagine the Fourth and Fifth books would be a terrible grind if you've seen the show. Hell, they were a grind without having seen the show.

I watched the first season and then read all the books. I don't think it changed my viewing experience in any notable way. I enjoyed the show before reading and still enjoyed it after.

If anything, reading the books will allow you to participate in all the discussions which are sometimes more interesting than the show.

The best way I would describe the books is a grind. They are interesting but I personally think they are far too long than they needed to be.

Read the first book after watching the first season. Did not detract from my experience. The book has much more information about Robert's rebellion.

I had read a couple of them a few years ago. By the time it came on tv I didn't remember much. Watched the first season and then read through them all. The first season is pretty true to the books while the others detract here and there. So you're in a good position.

Stop watching and read through Book 3 at least. I'd read all the way through Book 5, though.

As amazing as the series depicted Storm of Swords, it was ten times better in the books.

The books were an absolute slog and I stopped after about 1.5.

As good as they are supposed to be, even their staunchest supporters seem to skip whole swaths of the story or hate certain povs. The world is cool, but martin's writing does nothing for me.

Having watched 4 seasons THEN tried to read the books I can tell you it is much harder to read once you start. I honestly couldn't get through the first book I was so bored.

As someone who is in the "ASOIAF is overrated" crowd, I would still recommend reading all the books. I've enjoyed them all a good bit, I just wouldn't put them in the GOAT discussion like some do.

Books suck man and if GRRM doesn't finish the series you're gonna be pissed. Just watch the show and read the books after if you'd like as they differ to an extent.

My SO watched all 4 seasons before opening the 1st book...she just started the 3rd.

She loves the show but if you like to read, the books like in most cases are even better than the film adaptations.

I just started the 1st book and it has me hooked and it is usually difficult to get me to read at all.

I kinda agree the first book was a slog. But once you get really into the story it's a lot easier to wade through...

"...If I just get through this one boring arse Bran chapter, the next one is Arya and I can't fricking wait for that..."

If you are interested in that genre I would read a series that is already complete first.
