I bought a New TV and was wondering what the Tech Boards opinion was on paying for a warranty. It costs $40 for 4 years. Also, has anyone had a positive or negative experience in getting a TV repaired under warranty. Thanks

I would pass, especially on a $300 TV. Usually if you make it past the manufacturer's warranty period without issues, you're in good shape.

I always decline these things. They are a big moneymaker for the company selling them. By the time the manufacturer's warranty runs out, you'll want a bigger/better TV anyway and they will probably cost $40 by then.

They typically set these "insurance" figures around 13-15%.
$40 on a $300 investment.

However, that percentage is greater than the manufacture defect ratio. So, they almost always make a profit. Like gambling at a casino. The odds are in their favor.

However, 4 years isn't a bad term. Alot of times, they'll offer you one or two at 15% on things like refrigerators, etc.... where it is super expensive, but they know the market statistics and try to maximize their profit.

I bought a 55" Mitsubishi rear projection, top of the line big screen TV when high def was just becoming popular. I think it was 13 years ago. I paid $3000 for the TV and I had the hard sell put on me to buy the extended service plan for $300. I got the typical bs about how that's how much a single lamp would be if one burned out. 13 years later and it still works like the day I bought it. I can now buy a better TV for the $300 I would have spent on the extended service plan.

True. The failure rate on electronics is like under 1% in from 0-2yrs... which is like the traditional range of the manufacturer's warranty. The extended plan it goes to like 2% or something still crazy low at 4 years. So... pretty much a scam.

If you can afford to pay the full repurchase price... insure yourself.

When LCD TVs where fairly new the Sam's Club manager offered me a 4 year warranty for $30 if I upgraded my Sam's Club account. Bought a 52" Sony. About a year or two later a car hit a power pole on my street and the transformer blew up with resulting damage to the TV. I would get occasional ghosting images on the TV. I called the ext. warranty and they sent me the latest 52" Sony with few new features. They told me to do what I wanted with the old one. It's in my shop and I turn it on occasionally but haven't watched it enough to see if it still has the intermitent problem.

That's the only ext. warranty I have ever purchased.

Pay for it with Amex and they'll double your warranty from one year to two for free.

I've done this with Visa for years and have had claims paid. Be sure to keep all receipts and warranty information. Have benefited from this with several laptops.
