So I'm re-doing our family budget for 2015. Wondering if any of you have experience using the app Mint, or something similar.

I'm looking just to track monthly bills and expenses. Any other programs I should look at?

We've used Good Budget and envelopes in that past but I didn't really care for those. Mint seems cool because it can link your accounts, but i don't know how well it works.

I use the app called "Mint Bills and Money". It was previously called Check but they just renamed it. It's been fantastic for me to be able to have all of my logins for different expenses, accounts, and stocks all in one place. Has reminders for bills coming due and everything.
But, it's different from the one called "Mint Personal Finance" which I saw terrible reviews on

I've found that I don't like any Budget apps. I just make my only chart in "Numbers" and stick to it as best I can.

Mint isn't great for budgeting in my opinion. Too many uncategorized transactions.

You want a program that will guide you to make and keep a budget, or you want something hands off?

You Need A Budget is pretty good, but they make an explicit point not to have account linkage functionality because they feel you should be active in your management of your money.

That's a good question. Haven't given that much thought. i'd really like for both my wife and I enter a transaction from our phones when it happens. And then for the program to auto sync. I'd also like reminders that XYZ bill hasn't been paid or auto-drafted yet. My biggest problem is not only making sure we don't over spend on variable expenses (grocery, restaurants, etc) but forgetting when large payments haven't been posted yet that month.

Does YNAB sync between a PC and multiple devices?

Yes. You make your budget and do most of the leg work on the PC.

Then you use apps on phones to report expenses through the cloud. And everything syncs.

It offers no bill reminder ability though.

You are asking a little bit late unfortionately. I hopped in a few days ago to try to get my finances in better control with the start of the new year and it was on sale at 15 dollars on Steam.

Full price is 60, but they do offer a free 34 day trial to see if it is the right fit for you.

Just keep in mind there is a big difference between software geared to help you make and keep a budget, and financial management software.

Hence the question. Your OP implies you wanted the former, but the recommendations were more the latter.

And in line with that: Keep in mind YNAB is focused on managing cash flow. You CAN add investment accounts if you want to see everything in one place, but even they say there isn't much point.

Seconded. YNAB is the best personal finance software out there. Support the little guy. I think the company that makes it has two employees. I had a technical question one time and talked to the CEO.

quicken is by far the best overall personal finance program. YNAB is lacking in features and to me, is too geared towards budgeting. mint is pretty much quicken lite and lacked a few features that i used a lot in quicken like cash flow projections. to the guy who said that mint had too many uncategorized transactions, you know you can make your own categories right?

eta: i would suggest mint if all you want to do is track expenses and budget. it is available anywhere you go since it is web based.

I can vouch for Mint (Check) as well. Excellent, secure, everything in one place and alerts you when bills are due. You can also pay bills for free through the app (takes a few days longer however).

I can agree with Quicken.

However, their sunset provisions they build in the software puts a nasty taste in my mouth and I can't recommend it as a basis of principle rather than practicality.

We started using YNAB in November and love it. You have to have buy-in from the spouse for it to work but we've been very pleased. syncs seamlessly between iPhone and our Macbook Air. Nov was a tough time to start a budget with all of the expenses for the holidays but it really made us buckle down and have great start to 2015.

Even if you can't get it on sale it's worth every penny IMO.

So far I'm using both Mint and YNAB till I figure out which i like best. Thing I can't figure out about YNAB is the best way to enter income. I haven't got paid in Jan yet so it's showing i'm over budgeted. Is it better to just enter my total may for the month at the beginning? Seems like to biggest benefit is entering expenses and it auto decrements from what's left. I'm I missing anything else?

I like how Mint has the bill sync, though I wish they were the same program.

While probably not realistic, i'd like to get away from checking my bank account online and just go by what's entered in the software.

If you think your check stub will be the same as december's, you can go ahead and enter it now. Set it up for weekly or biweekly or whatever it is and it should take it from there

Thanks for all the feedback in this thread and after playing around with different software here is what I'm still having trouble with:
- Both Mint and YNAB lack some key features I need (Mint-manual entering accounts, YNAB-alerting when bills are due)
- From what I understand about Quicken it does both of these functions. However, does it allow you to sync with multiple computers? So if i enter budget info on my PC can my wife view it on hers or her phone? I searched their website but wasn't able to get a clear answer.

Quicken can update to the cloud and is accessible on phones. I think you can access it on other computers too but I'm not sure.
