Can I get some pros/cons on this guy as a HC?

Should he get another head gig, could he/would he be successful, given the right situation?

I did not like him as coach of the Texans. He's boring (aww shucks, he's just a little nicked up) - wouldn't be good at recruiting - and he shows the same loyalty to players and friends that people crucify Miles for.

I'd put him on par with a Cam Cameron in terms of ability and personality. He gets too much respect and a pass for "developing" that Denver offense that was really Elway's doing.

In the NFL? No probably not.

In college? Yeah I think he could be successful with some decent coordinators.

He played QB for us in the 80s and then was the running backs coach before going to the NFL so he could probably pick up recruiting pretty fast and having NFL head coach on his resume would probably sway some kids.

Great guy, players and fans will like him as a person. As a head coach, he was willing to completely hand over the defense to a coordinator and he's not a guy who wants all the power. His offense is not very flexible and is about as fun as watching grass grow. Not a risk taker. Glad to see the offense and play caller leave, but sad to see the man go.

He's too predictable and likes to get outcoached in the second half.

Nice guy though.

The Kubiaks and Shanahans are program killers. Not sure why they have so much respect and keep getting jobs.

Not a Texans fan, but I live in DC so I've seen every Ravens game this year (he is currently Ravens OC).

Kubiak is a finesse coach who prefers the running game. I noticed that his zone run scheme is solid and big plays are to be had in the play action game. The problem is, its a soft run game. Linemen are small and agile (good between the 20's) but they cannot bow up in short yardage situations. There are also droughts where the offense will go an entire quarter without a first down. In week 17, he had a 3rd & Goal and a 4th & Goal from the 1, and on consecutive plays he tried to pull linemen...stuffed both times obviously; so he can make some headscratching calls.

Having said that, Flacco has posted his best-ever numbers as a pro under Kubiak. Justin Forsette is leading the NFL in yds per carry. There are tangible positives, but I prefer a more physical style of offensive football fwiw.

Excellent assessment. That describes his time in Houston perfectly. Good offense overall, but it sucked in the redzone. Look at how many career TDs Andre Johnson has, for example.

As a HC, he is weak. Not a leader. His voice is anti-commanding.

As a OC, he is strong.

cons
-poor at hiring coordinators, defensive ones, to be exact. kept hiring his buddies from his denver days. only tabbed bum's kid bc the owner bob mcnair did it
-plays tight in big games. we were humiliated all the time in prime time. sunday at noon, at home? wins lot. monday night football with everyone watching? disaster.
-his scheme seemed to get "figured out" as he spent more and more time in HOU
-was very stubborn. with hires, with players in the draft, with his game day decisions. he always seemed to take the blame, but never really sounded like he was willing to learn/adapt/change. it was his way, and if hes going down, hes doing it his way.
-on a similar note that kinda rolls these all together, he seemed to like "yes men" who would listen and not challenge him. it was his show.

pros
-very successful implementing his system, and was, for the most part, successful with it. people seem to forget how inept it was under capers. he breathed life into it immediately.
-for years, i claimed matt schuab was a bum. in hindsight, it seems he was massively propped up by the offensive philosophy and the coaching. i believe kubiak deserves credit for that.
-while im glad hes gone, he did win 2 playoff games here, and that should mean something. even it was only andy dalton he beat twice
