John Chavis: Per source, Les and the administration met last night and then Les met with Chavis. The team is headed back to Baton Rouge today; but we understand that Chief is headed to his ranch up near Knoxville to think about some things. As of 7am this morning, per sources, he had not informed LSU or A&M of a final answer. Sources we have spoken with believe that Chavis’ buyout at LSU drops from $400,000 to zero at midnight tonight.

Why would the buyout drop to zero for the new year?

Is that EST or CST?
But that does look like the smoking gun. So it looks like A&M will have their defensive coordinator at 12:01 a.m.

maybe. maybe not.
What it looks like to me is this...
Miles wants Chavis to stay and has pled his case to the AD. AD doesn't want to give a raise or give into demands from Chavis. Chavis wants to be at LSU but not so much that he gives in. Everyone is playing a very expensive game of chicken. Can't blame either side here. LSU has legitimate reasons to not give in and so does Chavis. LSU's team didn't do much to help Chavis' case yesterday.
Miles met with Chavis to plead one last time t and Chavis is thinking things out.

Probably because when the contract ends so does the buy out. Our fault for not locking him up earlier.

I'll go on the record and say this is a combination of leverage by Chavis' agent and aggy trying to do damage control on their recruiiting class. This all wreeks of an agent stirring shite, and Chavis speaking seems to want no part of it. I think he was talked into getting the most he can out of his last contract and this is how it's going to get done. Aggy is the perfect leverage; what would piss of LSU boosters more than knowing the cocky little shits next door scooped him? Very rarely does this much shite leak unless it's all to further negotiation, I think if it were going to happen it wouldn't have hit until he was in CS.

he is under contract through 2015
If the buyout ends a year early, then Alleva screwed that up too
Still, I think Chavis is showing a ton of pride in this thing along with some ungratefulness to LSU who has stepped up pay over the last 6 seasons. When he left Tennessee after 17 seasons, he was making 350k.
I am done with him

LSU has offered the coach a new three-year, $4 million contract paying him $1.33 million a year, a $30,000 raise from his current deal with the school. The university is not budging on the deal, sources said.

The simplest answer is the right one: A&M is getting Chavis and saving $400,000.

For the love of god, I hope Admin is shooting out "are you interested emails", Cam and other coaches are calling people they know, TAF is submitting lists of predicted available DC's, and Miles is inviting the biggest targets to his house right frigging now.

I'll personally be disappointed if he does not go.

You lose Chavis right now you also lose a extremely important defensive recruiting class. If Miles doesn't make a homerun Dick LeBeau like hire he will be all but done. LSU's football program and recruiting class will be picked apart like buzzards on a piece of road kill.
