Setting up a 529 for my daughter before the year ends and just wondering which fund you chose for this purpose and why. I am 27 and she is 3

(side note, i have a roth invested in the vanguard 500 and another sep invested in a target retirement fund.)

Look into Alaska's. I understand it has some advantages, I haven't looked into it yet.

We have one each for my two sons. One is with Utah. The other is through Upromise which uses State Street (SSGA). We choose Utah because it routinely ranks highly for cost, choices, etc. The Upromise 529 is part of the Upromise rewards system.

We chose START. I started it the month each of my kids were born. 14 yrs ago Money Magazine said LA's 529 was the best option if you are in LA, due to low fees and the state matching funds. Haven't really looked at it since. Have just cut them a check every month for the last 14 yrs.

LA, AK, UT are all in top 4 ranked 529 programs. As mentioned above, there may be benefits by using one in which you are domiciled.

I was actually referring to which fund to choose from the start choices.

It looks like the have about 9 vanguard funds to choose from going from conservative to aggressive, International/domestic ect.
I was just wondering which strategy people chose when concerning kids college.

I'm not familiar with the choices in LA, as we are in TX, to give specific advice.

However, I'm sure they offer an age-based option where the funds are chosen for you. (You might get to choose whether you want to be safe, moderate, aggressive, etc. like Utah does.)

I picked the age-based option, which rebalances every few years, and let them worry over the details.

If you live in LA pick the Start program here. The state will match a minimum of 2% each year UPTO 14% depending on your income the year before. So you will always know what your contributions match will be the following year you can choose to put in more if there are years you are going to be getting a 14% match. Also, you get a reduction of state income taxes in LA for your contribution.

Almost forgot. You can transfer money from other states 529 into the LA Start 529 program and get the match for the total based on your income for the previous year. So even though you have a plan in Utah or wherever and just realized you missed out on LA match, you can transfer it all in now and still get the match.

question on the Louisiana 529. What if we move or my kids decide to go to an out of state school? What do I loose, the state's contribution?
