This has been going on for 3 months now in print media. USA Today and the NYT print at least 2 articles a week chiding tech companies for not hiring enough blacks and females. The industry is dominated by white and Asian males. This has become a crusade for them.

Some spokesmen for the companies, like Microsoft and Google get really defensive and say stuff like 'Yeah, we're trying to do a better job of creating more diversity in our hires."

But last week the guy who invented Pay Pal really stepped in it. He said "The tech industry is the closest thing to a true meritocracy in the business world. We hire the best people regardless of race or gender."

Well, this didn't sit well with Gannet. In USA Today they responded: "Oh yeah? Well, if that's true how come there are so few women hires? Are you saying men are smarter than women? Hmmm?"

Nowhere do they consider the possibility that more men are drawn to that field of study. Or that men have a greater aptitude in technology. Oh no, that can't possibly be true.

I honestly just can't stand listening to women talk about things.

these days that is irrelevant. that's a symptom of some sort of privilege in their eyes, and all groups should be just as interested in each industry as all other groups

Hey, my wife is not allowed in the kitchen. If I had to eat her cooking I'd have died 15 years ago.

Yes. USA today. Definitely a titan of tech industry periodical. That's what the professionals read!

On the bleeding edge of innovation!

Are you really that dull?

My family's business is technology driven and I have never wanted to be part of it. I don't believe that's because I'm female but three of my four brothers were drawn to it like moths to a flame. Each earned engineering degrees that would benefit them in running the very business I reject.

My older sister has a position with the firm but its not one on the engineering side of things.

Do you think the target audience is the tech industry? Do you think that has any bearing on the point of the op? Are you that dull?

No, but it is what the rabble rousers read. Look for the whining and bitching to result in an investigation/shakedown by the DOJ.

If you read the trade and pro stuff about tech (my field and business) you would see the arguments aren't that there aren't enough women in tech.

The argument that I see is the nature of it is essentially a man-child computer nerd dominated culture and it inhibits women pursuing it as a career option. Smart women are putting their skills in things like medicine and law. IT is trying to find a way to recruit that talent but has been less effective.

They aren't leaning in.

However I read the nyt almost every day and I don't know what the op is talking about the cries of women and tech. Sounds made up for a fake point. USA today is a joke.

so basically the industry rags are promoting the PR of the industry?

Instead of narrowing gender gaps, the technology industry created vast new ones for Stanford University’s pioneering class of 1994.

Hacking Sexism in Tech

quote:

Bias against women in tech is pervasive, whether in the blatant sexism female video game developers face, the dismissive attitudes of C.E.O.’s or day-to-day difficulties that estrange women, even on the business side of the industry.

Many of the biggest tech companies — including Google, Facebook, Apple and Yahoo — have released diversity reports in an effort to be transparent about how few women and minorities they employ.

But what more should tech companies do to eliminate bias against women?
