And how many times has the defense stopped the last drive?
I'll hang up and listen

Our base defense is #1 in the SEC.
Our prevent defense is equal to a junior high school.

Jamal-While I understand your question about the defense and the last drive, you must also ask yourself how many times have the offense put a game away with a TOUCHDOWN drive???

2012 Bama game had more to do with Miles not trusting his QB on 3rd down late in the game and playing for a FG and a 6 point lead. But certainly 3rd and Chavis burned us there as well.
I agree 100%. That said, the defense still came on to the field at the end of the game with the lead or tied needing just one stop to end the game. As the OP said, they have dropped the ball in some big spots.
Chavis has been criticized for being too conservative in those situations, however IIRC LSU was blitzing often in those spots. The problem seems to be that while the defense is keeping everything underneath them, they aren't making tackles in bounds to keep the clock moving.
Like or not, it's to the point where it's hard to trust that LSU can prevent a game winning drive in a big game. With that being the case, Les has to start going for the knockout when he has the chance instead of hoping the defense can keep the opponent off the board at the end.

Well in 2014 ALONE.
We stopped Wisconsin from driving the field with 2:23 time left and won the game 28-24
Against Florida, we stopped them from scoring a TD when they had a 1st and goal from the 1 yard line. AND THEN with :54 seconds left we stopped them from trying to score again and INTERCEPTED the ball which allowed us to kick a FG to win the game. Final 30-27
Against Ole Miss, we stopped them from scoring during the last possession of the game. This time, ending the game with an interception on our own 1 yd line. Final 10-7
Againt Texas A&M, we stopped them from scoring with 2:07 left on the clock by.. You guessed it.. Another interception to close the game. Final 23-17
So now that you have "hung up and listened".. what do you have to say? Those times don't count??

This year's Bama loss wasn't the defense's fault, it was the phantom PI on 3rd and long (2nd one of that drive was definitely legit, but they would have punted already). The refs needed Bama to win for the Sec to get their cashcow into the playoffs.

While is it frustrating to lose in the end with the defense on the field, overall the defense has just been a better unit than the offense with rare exceptions.

Not to mention if Jennings doesn't hit dural on that deep ball vs Arlansas that could have been another one ....
That would have been a bad loss, but it doesn't fit the thread. The D had back to back 3 and outs which led to 10 points for LSU. Then after the big play to Dural, they had a sack fumble on the last drive to seal the game. That is actually a rare instance of the D stepping up and taking over the game in the 4th.

Which is the theme of this thread?

Exactly. Thank you, Dr Shultz.

And they managed to get Domingue in on the take too? Crafty bastards.

It really sucks when they've been playing really well all game but can't manage a stop when it really matters like the last couple bama games.
I don't recall seeing actual prevent cover, but too concerned with getting beat deep.
Seems O/ST/D all went into freak out mode in last couple minutes.

UT fans told us about this. It's the chief's Achilles heel.
Ps - we should also mention how Les gets overly conservative offensively with small leads and puts the defense in tough spot constantly

You don't seem like you know what you're talking about, so you get a pass and I'll explain it to you.
With poor offensive play, the defense spends considerably more time on the field. This they're tired at the end of the game.
LSU's defenses are consistently in the top of the SEC despite the fact that they're always on the field.

During Chief's entire tenure, we have been behind in TOP exactly once... Jordan Jefferson's first year.
But dont let that stop you from repeating the garbage you hear on this site.

2012 bama punted every time they had the ball in the second half except for the last drive
Clemson we started throwing the fricking ball everywhere instead of letting hill just run out the clock? Sometimes the best defense is time of possession. See the A&M game this year. 7 minute drives with points is a recipe for success.
44 points to UGA is miserable yes, but everyone ragged on the defense all last year and didn't exactly give them a pass. Also pretty sure they had 28 or 31 at half, so they adjusted and played better. And why not blame OBJ for that muffed punt inside our own 15 for a short score after our defense had played very well in the second half?
So mett throwing 3 INT's in the red zone against ole miss. That's 9 points if we get just field goals on all those drives. shite we were lucky to even be back in the game and have it tied at 24, and pretty sure the D forced a couple turnovers of our own to battle back.
And Blake sims this year balled out man. He did it to us, and he did it in the MSU game saving a game winning drive twice on third down.
Finally, how many fricking three and outs does our offense have? In most of our losses we can't move the football on offense so our defense plays the majority of the game. That's why the defense gets a pass, because our offense can barely complete one.
The defense doesn't get blamed most of the time is because we'd never be in position to lose any of those games (except UGA) if not for their pretty solid performances in the first 58 minutes. And ole miss this year, kudos to them for hanging in there after our offense kept turning it over. Must be frustrating to go out there knowing you have zero margin for error most of the time since we don't score many points ourselves. Top overall defense in the conference this year. Dead last QB in the NCAA. That's why. That's why the defense gets a pass.
I definitely see your point, though. Parachute defense. Slowly get picked apart. Teams know exactly what defense we run in those situations and they have game plans for it. And it seems we don't ever adjust or mix it up. And then like the one time we blitz, yeldon houses it on a screen. Sucks. It's frustrating. But if you have a solution, call up the Cheif.

The defense can only have their backs against the wall so many times before the finally break. It just happens to be at the most crucial point of the game.
Also, if you watch the end of the Bama '12, OM '14, and Bama '14 games, Chief runs the same nickel blitz every single time. Doesn't make sense when the Other team is trying to get rid of the ball quickly and conserve time

Time of possession only works if you score points on your drives
Posted on 12/26/14 at 12:20 pm to JPenn91
What does scoring points have to do with keeping the defense fresh? Winning the game, sure. But the defense doesn't get to rest more just because a drive ends in a TD.
