re: Oil Change places say every 3000 miles. Is that accurate?

Don't ever trust a mechanic's word. Check your cars maintenance schedule. Most say to change oil every 6k miles or more. Mine says 7,500 but I do it at 6,000.
3,000 is a rule that was irrelevant decades ago.

3,000 miles is like the "OSHA standard". Meaning, it's the safe bet and goes above and beyond what you actually need.

3k is so ingrained.
Have recently told my delivery driver and GF that it is outdated and I'm not sure they believe me.

Full Synthetic every 10k miles.

I do 15k with synthetic on my BMW. I have not had any problems with it since purchased in 2010

On my 911, they told me once a year or every 7,500-10,000 miles. On one of my Mustangs when I was growing up, I kept it for 7 years and changed the oil around 3 times. Never had any issues.

What would y'all do about a 2010 Nissan Murano? The GF doesn't drive much at all. She bought the Murano brand new in 2010 and only has 16,000 miles on it now. She gets it changed at the dealership like 3x a year(she pays $24.95 w/ coupon) and they always put the sticker on recommending every 3 months or 3000 miles of course.
Would she benefit from synthetic oil so she wouldn't have to change it as much?

the 3000 mi recommendation was conjured up by oil change places...the fact is, you need to go by what your vehicle's manual says to do...I typically get mine changed at about 5K....
if you use synthetic oil, you can go a lot longer than that, but you still need to get the filter changed at whatever the vehicle manufacturer recommends...

Usually not a good idea to switch from dino. You can (not 100 percent fact) develop leaks when switching.
Also, for you ****s, changing your oil once a year is a good policy cause of condensation that builds up inside of your engine.

Unless you have a super high end car, that is just money grabbing. You'll be fine at 5k

3,000 mile oil changes are antiquated.
Absolutely. A waste of money on today's cars. I change oil in my 2013 Sonata every 5,000 miles; I could go to 6,000 without trouble I'm sure.

It's a waste of money on any car, old or new.

I have an 05 and 06 Nissan Altima (V6) that I change the oil every 5000 miles or 6 months. Just did the 05 because it had an oil leak at the engine oil cooler seal. Went 5 months and only put 3864 on it, with total miles at 125k. I do all the oil changes myself and use synthetic oil.

I go 3,000. I never had a newer model vehicle. I have a 02 mustang with 153000 miles and I always get told every 3,000. Newer model vehicles depending on the make and other factors can get away with 5-7,000

Wrong. No vehicle needs an oil change at 3k. I have 6 vehicles (some are over 37 years old) and none change their panties that often. It's total BS.

We have the 13 Sonata as well and my wife freaks if I don't change it every 3000 miles. I keep telling her 5000 is perfectly fine but she is just cautious because we had to drop a new engine in our 08 Suburban......in 2013 primarily due to poor maintenance. We would go 7000+ between changes and she did not listen when I suggested she not floor the pedal every time she accelerated. Our new engine requires a change every 3000 for the 3.year warranty to be valid.

Get a used oil analysis. It's the only valid way to determine what the oil change interval is for YOUR car/environment and driving style. It's only around $30 and you can mail it in (I use Blackstone Labs).
3k is old, but could be valid for the filter in really harsh environment with tons of particulate. Or if you have bad head seals.
The good thing about UOA is it can also give good life indicators of bearings, rings, etc by the degradation of the special alloys used.
Ultimately, I've gone as short as 5k per a UOA (Infiniti V6) and as long as 10-12k. For longer intervals (8k+), the filter will likely require changing between oil changes.
