Going to church doesn't get you closer to God? Then why do people go to church?

starting with the New Covenant, you know the part where Jesus comes in, where specifically (hint, look in the New Testament), where are there "particulars" about worshipping in a church or how church is to be conducted?

i'll wait....

My parents told me if I don't visit them often, then don't bother visiting them at Christmas.

It feels like a more important mass. I think a lot of people, like me, feel guilty for rarely going to mass so try to at least make the 2 most important holy days of obligation.

Easter and Christmas mass are not Holy Days of Obligation. You would know this if you went to mass regularly.

don't know why - however, they should go to the local Hospice, god is always hanging around those places.

I go on Christmas to make my SO's mother happy. That's all. Although I personally enjoy the dim lights, Christmas song singing and ambiance, it's kind of boring and I wouldn't go for my own leisure.

Out of respect for my mother, I find time twice a year to sit with a bunch of people that worship a jewish zombie.

This was a pet peeve of mine for years. It inevitably clogs up the church on those days whereas if people just either went or didn't go like they do all year long the churches would be the appropriate size to seat everyone. And even when we went very early to get seats I'd feel obligated to get up and give mine to a lady or mom and child that came in later so they wouldn't have to stand up.

It doesn't really bother me anymore though. At least on Christmas they have Midnight Mass which is never completely full. Plus, if people are doing it to bring joy to their loved ones, that's all for the good in my book.

Because my mom wants me to go. I'm an athiest, but I could never tell her that. It would break her heart. So I still go to church with her every Christmas, because I know she wants us to.

Same here, and it would seem that applies to most people that only go on those 2 days. To make someone else happy, not because they want to go all of a sudden.

Not sure what's so hard to understand here really

Although I don't agree with the institution of religion that I was raised in. I still respect it and will go on those occasions out of respect. I believe in God, but I don't think we can ever comprehend him. I think too many preachers just want the cash and power.

Christmas is not a Holy Day of obligation? I think you are mistaken my son

Easter is on a a Sunday so it's obligatory already.

Let's run the numbers on this to put it in proper perspective. Use the following formula. The answer might surprise you.

(total time it takes to go to 1 Church service) **divided by** (total time you spend watching TV, surfing the web, working, jogging, hunting, drinking coffee at Starbucks, shopping and generally goofing off during a typical week) = ???

The God of the Old Testament is the same as the new testament and he was very specific about how he should be worshipped. He never told us otherwise. He wanted a temple in Jerusalem.

The Old Testament is the biggest chunk of the Bible. If you want to ignore everything in it, then maybe Christians need to just exclude the OT altogether.
